Week 8 : Collage Post 1

This week is collage week. Collaging is something that I have not done many times before, and so this was a learning experience. This piece captures a past dream of mine, where I am suddenly shrunken down to insect size. You can see in this collage, a sunflower of which a small figure is entering. I used newspaper and magazine scraps to construct this image.

  1. I am so interested in the dream you decided to depict here Emily! It sounds quite fantastic and I wonder how the experience of trying to recreate it felt for you? Since dreams are such an abstract experience, perhaps abstraction is actually realism in their representation!

I see you really working with negative space here in a great way. I also think it is great you really used the texture/pattern of your source material to create value. A flower out of newspapers can be more fantastic than a regular photo of a flower!

I wonder if your collage is actually in black and white? Or did you convert the images to greyscale here? Either way, the black and white representation of the collage will help you as you make the drawing translation this week. I am excited to see how that turns out!
