I’m Chloe Elliott, a third-year microbiology and molecular genetics double major, and environmenatal science minor. I am focused on a molecular biology and genetics research career.
Year in Review
Over this past year, I have learned a lot and grown substantially as an individual. I have taken so many courses and I have learned so much. I have now been at Ohio State for two years, and I am halfway through my education here. I have also pursued my research in microbiology for about two years now, and I have learned a lot about what it takes to do research and how the publishing process works in the industry. I have had accomplishments, including winning scholarships for my research, and I have had failures, including failed trials and data. All of this being said, my experiences this past year have only made me want to pursue my career in science even more. I love the community here at Ohio State and I am excited to see what the next two years bring me in my education and my college experience.
A class that really had an impact on me was my first microbiology-focused class at OSU. The class was Microbiology 4100, and it focused on the basics of microbiology and also included a lab portion. I really enjoyed this class because it was all about microbiology, which is the branch of science that I am most interested in. The portion of this class that had the most impact on me was the lab portion. This is because I learned so many important laboratory techniques required for nearly all research in microbiology and I could apply these techniques to my personal research here at OSU. I have included my favorite assignment from this class, The Yogurt Poster and experiment.Yogurt Poster

- Global Awareness: I have always been interested in studying abroad; but now with the current pandemic situation I’m not sure when I will be able to do that. At some point in my future I would like to visit another continent, such as Asia or Africa, to study how viruses and diseases spread differently there than in the United States and also how their communities are impacted by these diseases. The current height of the COVID-19 Virus has spiked my interest in this topic even further.
- Original Inquiry: The branch of microbiology that interests me the most is research. Ohio State has so many researchers that are engaged in their own individual research projects, and I love learning about them. I attend as many research lectures as possible, hosted by Biological Science Scholars, Microbiology club, and my professors.
- Academic Enrichment: I am interested in taking as many courses that relate to microbiology that I can fit into my schedule, but I am also interested in the environmental sciences, so I plan to begin taking courses in that subject as well. For example, this semester I am taking Micro 4110, Molecular Genetics 5706, and Organic Chemistry 2.
- Leadership Development: A future leadership goal of mine is to become an executive member of the society that I was recently inducted into: Helix Tri-Beta. This is a society at Ohio State that encourages members to expand their interests in the biological sciences, and I would like to become a leader in the future.
- Service Engagement: I am currently a part of the Ohio State club BuckeyeThon, which raises money for kids with cancer and hosts events for them and their families. I have also volunteered at the NNEMAP Food Pantry, which helps those in need in the Columbus community feed their families.
- Vision Statement/Statement of Action: While at Ohio State, I would like to learn as much about different branches of science and subjects and obtain as much knowledge as possible. I would also like to ensure I keep my GPA at least a 3.0 as classes get more difficult. I would also like to immerse myself more into different clubs and communities on campus. After graduation, I would like to obtain my master’s degree in either microbiology or molecular genetics. I would then like to explore different career paths in scientific research to determine where my best interests lay.
Career
I have not yet began my career path, but my main goal is research. I am currently doing research with the Anderson Lab here at OSU. We work on a pathogenic yeast called Candida albicans. The research I am interested in is on pathogens, bacteria, and microorganisms. My goal is to one day become a microbiologist so that I can head research of my own. I have attached my resume, which shows my involvements on campus and my accomplishments.
Artifacts
I am a member of Ohio State’s Helix Tri-Beta honorary biological society. This society encourages members to expand their interest in the biological sciences and be a part of a community of scholars who share similar interests as them. I plan to use this experience to further my scientific knowledge to get a head start on research for my future career in microbiology.
I have also completed research of my own for the Anderson Lab here at OSU and I have included my recent presentation for the lab. Presentation
About Me
Hello, my name is Chloe Elliott. I am a junior at The Ohio State University. I’m double-majoring in Microbiology and Molecular Genetics and minoring in Environmental Science. I’m from Springfield, Ohio and I graduated from Springfield-Shawnee High School. I chose to participate in the Biological Science Scholars program because in the future I hope to participate in research at Ohio State and this scholars program has a lot of great opportunities to engage in research. I am currently doing undergraduate research at Ohio State in the Department of Microbiology.
