2D to 3D Translation

Project Statement

To explore the relationship between 2D shapes and 3D forms, I translated one of the shapes I made in the shape grammar assignment and used that as my plan view to create a 3D form. I combined my orthographic and isometric drawings to create a template that had an extrusion hidden behind the plan view shape. Using the same template of my simple 3D form I utilized the negative space within the structure to make it more complex. By cutting out shapes and constructing them inward, I created a nice contrast between the outward extruding shapes from my original form. This catches the eye to look inside the space as well as transforms the structure to feel more open and free.

Reflection

This project taught me how important it is to plan out all of your ideas before you begin the design process. Through the iteration stage, I made about 15 different templates in order to fix one tiny measurement. This caused me to jeopardize my craft and led me to feel rushed as the deadline approached. However, I discovered when I spend more time reflecting on my initial idea and any challenges I may have, the iteration process becomes a lot easier. If I were to have explored larger options rather than focusing on the tiny details I would have been happier with the outcome. Overall, this project made me realize how crucial time management can be as a designer. Now I know that balancing my time during each stage of the design process will help me improve with my craft and my stress.
