Year in Review

Looking back on my first year, I am very pleased with how I’ve grown academically and personally. Though my coursework throughout the year was at times quite difficult, I was able to keep up with it and maintain good grades for both semesters. I was happy that I was quickly able to find and stick to a good balance between getting work done and enjoying myself with the large amount of free time I had outside of classes. I was able to make several new friends on campus, as well as maintaining friendships with high school peers also attending The Ohio State University. I found that there were no issues that I ran into throughout the year that I couldn’t find an effective solution to, and one of the main lessons I learned throughout my first year was that persistence in the face of difficulty almost always pays off. I also feel even more confident than I did beginning my freshman year that a career in pharmacy is right for me. I look forward to my second year, and am glad for all the valuable experience and lessons I’ve gained from my first!

  • Global Awareness: Students cultivate and develop their appreciation for diversity and each individual’s unique differences. For example, consider course work, study abroad, involvement in cultural organizations or activities, etc.
  • Original Inquiry: Honors & Scholars students understand the research process by engaging in experiences ranging from in-class scholarly endeavors to creative inquiry projects to independent experiences with top researchers across campus and in the global community. For example, consider research, creative productions or performances, advanced course work, etc.
  • Academic Enrichment: Honors & Scholars students pursue academic excellence through rigorous curricular experiences beyond the university norm both in and out of the classroom.
  • Leadership Development: Honors & Scholars students develop leadership skills that can be demonstrated in the classroom, in the community, in their co-curricular activities, and in their future roles in society.
  • Service Engagement: Over the course of my first year at The Ohio State University, I was fortunate to take part in service activities with different groups on campus to make a positive impact on the communities around the university. Both my first and second semester, I was able to participate in service events organized by Pay-It-Forward, the Community Commitment event in late August and the Martin Luther King Day of Service event in January. I also participated in several service events through The Ohio State University’s Habitat for Humanity campus chapter, which I hope to become more involved in during my second year. In my second year, I had the opportunity to continue to volunteer with the campus chapter of Habitat for Humanity, as well as an organization known as Crosswalk Outreach to the Homeless. Details relating to my experiences with both organizations can be seen here: HSS 2nd Year Capstone Project.

About Me

My name is Peter Elgin, and I’m a first year student at the Ohio State University. I grew up in the town of Worthington, Ohio, and graduated from Thomas Worthington High School in the Class of 2018. I’m currently in the Bachelors of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences (BSPS) program, the Health Sciences Scholars (HSS) program, as well as the Early Admissions Pathway (EAP) program. I hope to pursue a career in pharmacy, and it was through the chemistry courses that I took while in high school that I made this decision. Music is a subject that I enjoy greatly, and I participated in several bands in and outside of school, as well as my high school’s Men’s Vocal Ensemble my senior year. In my free time, I enjoy reading, writing, and spending time with family and friends. I strongly believe that each person has their own valuable set of skills, and that they should do their best to use them to help others when they can. I participated in several mission trips through my church’s youth group while in high school, and I hope that I can continue to find ways to get involved with the community in and around Ohio State.
