G.O.A.L.S.

I plan to work toward the goal of Global Awareness to broaden my knowledge of various cultures and gain a greater appreciation for diversity while at Ohio State. To achieve this goal, I plan to take courses that focus on other cultures in order to enhance my understanding of the various aspects of cultures. These courses will show me the differences between various cultures and help me appreciate other cultures’ unique routines. I would appreciate travelling abroad to Spain through the university or with family to apply and witness what I learn in my Spanish culture classes in real life.

I plan to work toward the goal of Original Inquiry in order to gain hands-on experience in the laboratory and reinforce the topics I learn in the classroom by applying them in the lab. The science classes I am taking now that have a lab section will give me basic laboratory skills that I can expand in larger research projects. I plan to take advantage of Ohio State’s various research opportunities, either my sophomore or junior year, in a science-related project. I hope to figure out what exact research project I feel passionate about and get involved. As a member of the Honors program, I will push myself to take the honors versions of courses. These honors courses will allow for a more discussion-based atmosphere that will push my deep-thinking and communication skills.

I plan to work toward the goal of Academic Enrichment by taking upper-level and honors courses and courses that cover many different areas of study. As a member of the honors program, I have the benefit of taking the honors version of courses which will provide more personalized learning than the non-honors version of the same course. In my academic plan I elected to take many honors versions of courses to push myself and take advantages of the opportunities in the honors program. Also, priority scheduling will allow me to schedule classes I am interested in before the classes are filled. I chose to major in biology because throughout high school I have enjoyed courses in science and have a high curiosity toward learning about advances in science. I plan to attend medical school and the courses required for a major in biology will give me a good base knowledge for medical school. I will put my academics as a top priority in my life in order to succeed. I plan to use the resources and advisors available to me to aid in planning the best work load.

I plan to work toward the goal of Leadership Development by joining clubs or organizations on campus. I plan to join clubs that I feel passionately about or relate to my major to gain more experience in the science field. A club named Women in Math and Science provides opportunities to attend events with knowledgeable speakers and communicate with other females pursuing a career in the math or science fields. I hope to join the Honors and Scholars Programming Board to help organize events and provide opportunities to build a stronger Honors and Scholars community. I hope to build my leadership skills as a member in these clubs by aiding in brainstorming, building my communication skills, and enhancing my ability to work as a member of a team.

I plan to work toward the goal of Service Engagement by volunteering for organizations on or near campus. I have registered for BuckeyeThon at Ohio State in February in order to support the children in Nationwide Children’s Hospital. I feel passionately about helping these children suffering from cancer and hope to make a positive impact on their lives. The Honors and Scholars Programming Board, which I plan to become a member of, has a Service Engagement Community that plans many volunteering opportunities. As a member of the Honors and Scholars Programming Board, I will be working toward Service Engagement by volunteering my time to enhance the experience of the members in the Honors and Scholars community.

About Me

My name is Sarah Eley. I am from Revere High School in Richfield, Ohio. I played volleyball in high school, and senior year my team beat our rivals to win the Suburban League! Volleyball was the highlight of high school for me, and I hope to continue playing on an intramural team at Ohio State.  At Revere I took many honors courses and decided my favorite courses were in science and math. High school helped me decide that I want to pursue a career in the science field and major in biology. At Ohio State, I hope to gain abundant knowledge and build a strong foundation to become a well-qualified candidate for medical school.
