Module 7: Keys to Motivation For Online Learning

The most useful thing I learned in this module was about the vast amount of time management resources there are for my phone and computer. There seems to be an app or web extension for anything I could need. Using the Google Chrome extension, StayFocused, helped me stay focused when trying to get work done and showed me how much time I was wasting on other websites and how fast time went by when I was on them. I felt like this exercise went very well for me, I learnt a lot and now I can use the extension to help me study for finals. For the future, I will continue to use this web extension and I will search for other web extensions that could do things slightly better or solve other problems I have with time management/ motivation, such as picking up my phone when I am trying to work on my computer. Looking back over this semester and this class, I realize that I have learned a lot, most of which is directly applicable to my studies and I am able to apply it immediately while noticing a direct improvement. As far as advice to other students, I would advise them to be willing to try a new app or study strategy or technique, even if it doesn’t seem like it is going to work. You may be  surprised that it could end up being exactly what you needed to help you overcome your obstacles. The worst thing that could happen is you have to delete the app or web extension later and you now know that it doesn’t work for you.

Module 6: Searching and Researching: The foundations of Academic Writing

I found the creation of the resource guidebook to be very helpful. Not only did this give me an opportunity to go back and review what we have done during the class, but to find the highlights and the information and sources that I will want to keep with me in the future. I have already gone back to some of these sources, Purdue Writing Lab (https://owl.purdue.edu/), Khan Academy ( https://www.khanacademy.org/) as they are some of the best resources for  their topics I have every used. I frequently am able to use these site to answer a specific question I have on a topic, quickly. For the future, I will be sure to pull up this guidebook when I am trying to find resources to help me with these areas or to find a quick link to one of these excellent resources. Advice I would give to future students is to go back to the beginning of a semester and look at the information and find the highlights like we did with this resource guidebook creation. It is a very beneficial studying technique and helps consolidate information.  This can be done with challenging classes like Organic Chemistry and Calculus or with classes that provide a lot of useful information, like this class or a class that you take because it matches one of your interests.

Module 5: Web-Enhanced Listening and Viewing Strategies

The most useful thing from this module was how to take notes. I learned that my note taking technique does not include anything that has me going back to review and study my notes, editing the page and marking up what I wrote. With the Cornell notes, the video showed more intent with their structure then I have. they included space on the side for questions. This is definitely going to be something I try to change about how I take notes. One thing that I already do is active listening when I take notes, I allow myself to ask questions and think about what the lecturer is saying so that I am engaged and not falling behind in lecture. I think if I start implementing what I learned from this module I will be able to benefit a lot more from note taking and will most likely improve my grades and study habits. I would recommend to other students to spend 15 minutes looking at their own notes and seeing what style they are using and the information they are able to record. This will show them if they have any areas to improve on in their note taking and then help them in their classes in the future.

Module 4: Web-Enhanced Reading and Study Strategies

The most useful thing I learned in this module was the all of the different timer apps I can use to help me study/ do homework efficiently and in chunks. Being able to not worry about the time while working will make me be able to focus a lot more on the assignment. A website that I have already been using is Khan Academy. This is one of the best tools I have for helping me learn material that I am not understanding in class and giving examples for problems with guided solutions. I highly recommend using Khan Academy for classes where you are having a hard time understanding anything conceptually. The videos are free and they always do a good job showing what is happening and giving examples. I made a timeline using Timetoast and it was remarkably easy. It lets you start making the timeline immediately and for free. You can upload an image and it takes care of the formatting. All of the websites, apps, and study tools I learned about in this module will definitely be able to help me and I will be sure to try as many as I can in the future. Advice I would give to my classmates is to try the different variations of the apps, so Quizlet vs StudyStack and things like that so you can find one with the features you need and will most benefit your study habits.

Module 3: Efficiency in the Digital Age

For this module, the most useful thing that I found was from the reading this week, to break my larger tasks into smaller tasks. I usually don’t think to do these things and I try to get the entire thing done in one sitting. Breaking it up will be a lot less stressful and easier to start. I have already spent time looking at how I am spending my time over a week, this is one of the reasons I am sticking to a strict sleep schedule, going to bed and waking up everyday. This insures that I am well rested and able to complete tasks I need to each day, as well as keeping me healthy. In the future, I am going to try to break up larger tasks into smaller tasks, but I am also going to try to accomplish more in my free time. I give myself a lot of leisure time, but there is plenty of time during this that I am wasting time, either on my phone or watching videos I don’t care about. I think if I focus more on my goals, even if they are fun goals, I will be more satisfied and enjoy my time more. As for advice I would give to students, is to spend time every week or month, to either organize your life or think about your goals. I find that I can get lost in life and not know what I am doing or why I am doing it. It helps to spend time to clear things up and set me back on path.

Module 2: Communicating and Collaborating

In this module I learned that I need to work on my goal setting. It is the part of my work habits that I have developed the least. I have also learned that the other aspects of my work habits are well developed and I would say the techniques I use are effective. Because of this module, I have set the goal to improve my goal setting and to focus on gaining skills in that for future modules. With this module I was able to see an updated results of my time management skills. I saw that I improved in almost every aspect and I agree with those results, as my time management feels a lot smoother and I have had very little issues with time management in the last year. Advice for students would be to take the time management quiz (https://www.mindtools.com/pages/article/newHTE_88.htm) and see where your skills lie and where you can improve. In addition, I would recommend to complete tasks with time to spare. Frequently, tasks can take longer than anticipated, or a distraction can occur, or  there will be an issue that you have to deal with that increases the time it takes for you to get your task done. If you try to get the task done before the due date, you will be able to have these hiccups and they will not cause you to turn in anything late, or miss a dead line.
