BRUNO, RICHARD; Joshua Bomser
EHE College Department: Human Sciences
Project Title: Transcriptional regulation of hepatic inflammation by green tea extract in rodent models of oxidative stress
Project Dates: 02/01/2014 – 01/31/2016
Anticipated Total Award Amount: $450,000
Project Sponsor: National Institute of Food & Agriculture
Project Abstract: The specific aims of this project include: 1) defining the mechanisms by which green tea suppresses inflammatory responses under the transcriptional regulation of NFκB, and 2) identifying the mechanisms by which green tea protects against NASH in a Nrf2-dependent manner. These proposed studies will provide a novel and innovative opportunity to simultaneously define the extent to which green tea regulates inflammation associated with dysfunctional lipid metabolism. Furthermore, the findings from this application could potentially provide the framework for the development of additional dietary strategies to attenuate inflammatory stress in humans, thereby improving the nation’s nutrition and health.

Project Title: Evaluation of maternal, infant and early childhood home visiting program prenatal curriculum
Project Dates: 02/18/2014 – 09/30/2015
Anticipated Total Award Amount: $396,000
Project Sponsor: Ohio Department of Administrative Services
Project Abstract: Evaluators have designed a formal, state-of-the-art evaluation study to gain insight into the impact of an on-line training program called “InJoy Understanding Birth eClass.” ODH and the evaluation team hypothesize that exposure to this curriculum will result in enhanced knowledge, increased confidence of home visitors, increased retention, longer visits and ultimately, positive birth outcomes. Evidence has suggested that home visiting programs are powerful tools to address health disparities and other issues impacting pregnant women in Ohio. This project provides the opportunity to add to knowledge and practices regarding interventions aimed at improving health outcomes for Ohio mothers and their children.

Project Title: Weinland Park family-centered community change initiative
Project Dates: 09/15/2013 – 06/15/2014
Anticipated Total Award Amount: $89,508
Project Sponsor: Columbus Foundation
Project Abstract: The Weinland Park Collaborative (WPC) is engaged in the readiness stage for Family-Centered Community Change Initiative (FCCC) supported by the Annie E. Casey Foundation. Subsequent to the Readiness Phase, the WPC will engage in a full launch of the FCCC. Within both the readiness and launch stages, child-, family-, and community-level data will be vital for guiding formative aspects of the FCCC work (e.g., identifying potential mechanisms for change in the community, differentiating effective from ineffective strategies), facilitating summative evaluations conducted internally and externally, and exploring additional questions that will benefit the Weinland Park community.

This proposal seeks support for establishment and maintenance of the WPC data hub, which will be housed within the Crane Center for Early Childhood Research and Policy (CCEC) in a collaboration with the Schoenbaum Family Center (SFC) in the WPC. The CCEC is a college-level research center within the College of Education and Human Ecology at The Ohio State University. Leadership of the WPC data hub will be shared by Dr. Laura Justice (Executive Director, CCEC), Dr. Jane Wiechel (Executive Director, SFC), and Dr. Jill Pentimonti (Director of the Data Management Core, CCEC).
