Frequently Asked Questions

If I have graduate students conducting their own research projects, would UG students be allowed to collaborate on those projects under my supervision?

  • Yes, graduate students can help supervise the UG student researcher. But the research credit hours must be with the faculty member.

Does this framework differ from the conventional approach of UG students working with faculty in mentored experiences under Individual Studies courses such as HN4193, 1-3 credits, Individual Studies?

  • It does differ. This is for research credit hours – individual study does not require research.

Students must be enrolled in one of the courses below in order to participate in DURI.  Faculty will need to have their own section assigned in the Course Catalog under the desired course.  For example, a student registering for EDUCST 4998 will need to have their specific Faculty member assigned to a section, such as Section 0010.

If a Faculty member does not already have an individual section assigned in the Course Catalog, the Faculty member should contact their department to complete this process.

1. The faculty member should make the scheduling request directly to EHE-ES-Scheduling, the departmental inbox for scheduling. The request should include all class parameters (meeting pattern, room, enrollment cap, etc.). Since this is an independent research class, by default it is listed as in-person delivery with no particular room or meeting pattern, with an enroll cap of 10.

2. Request should include the chair of the relevant program (See below).

3. Approval of Associate Chair to build new course.

  • Educational Studies: Ann Allen.952
  • Human Sciences: Sue Sutherland.43 and Dre Higley.29
  • Teaching & Learning: Jena Bernth.3

Faculty members will then grant their students permission to enroll in their section via email.  Students should forward this permission to their Undergraduate Academic Advisor to be officially enrolled into the course.

Do students need to be from EHE or do all students qualify provided that they register for research credit with an EHE faculty member?

  • We are seeking to improve the undergraduate experience for EHE students. So, yes, participants need be EHE undergraduate majors/minors. Of course, faculty can engage non-majors in research credits, but the travel incentives for students and faculty incentives won’t be available.
