OIA Spring Break ’19 trip to Williamsburg, VA

During Spring Break 2019, I had the privilege of taking a trip to Williamsburg, VA, with through OSU’s Office of International Affairs (OIA).   OIA strives to integrate domestic and international students through shared experiences similar to this one.  This trip gave me the opportunity to meet and bond with students from all over the world, friends who I am still in touch with today.

Original Inquiry: Honors & Scholars students understand the research process by engaging in experiences ranging from in-class scholarly endeavors to creative inquiry projects to independent experiences with top researchers across campus and in the global community.

Engineering Group

OSU’s Engineering program allows students the opportunity of developing their own software game as an end-of-semester project.  My engineering group and I (pictured above) used our knowledge of MATLAB to research and code a computerized version of the classic card game “Go Fish”.  Read more about our project here.

Academic Enrichment: Honors & Scholars students pursue academic excellence through rigorous curricular experiences beyond the university norm both in and out of the classroom.

Bally Sports Group Internship

Before switching my major to Electrical Engineering/Pre-Law in Fall 2019, I was double majoring in Finance/Information Systems.  This led me to spend Summer 2019 as a Finance intern at Bally Sports Group, where I was asked to design payroll spreadsheets for the company on Excel.  This opportunity broadened my knowledge of Microsoft Office, a valuable skill for both finance and engineering students alike.

Leadership Development: Honors & Scholars students develop leadership skills that can be demonstrated in the classroom, in the community, in their co-curricular activities, and in their future roles in society.

Alaina, Tori, and Kelsey running an HCA program

I’m an Honors Community Advocate (HCA) at Lincoln Tower working alongside my team Tori (HCA) and Alaina (Honors Liaison).  As a second year OSU honors student, I serve as a peer mentor to first year honors students as they navigate coursework and campus life.   I work with the RAs, Hall Director, and Assistant Hall Director on campus to lead programs and excursions that benefit the Honors community in Lincoln Tower.

Service Engagement: Honors & Scholars students commit to service to the community.

Buckeyethon Dance Marathon ’19

I’m a team captain for BuckeyeThon, “the largest student run philanthropy in the state of Ohio which raises funds and awareness for the Hematology/Oncology/Bone Marrow Transplant Unit at Nationwide Children’s Hospital” (OSU Buckeyethon).  I recruit members for team Lincoln Love, and help to motivate and lead my team members through different fundraising events I organize.  I have helped to expand increase membership on my team by 100 students since last year, creating the biggest Buckeyethon team on campus.  I work alongside Buckeyethon General Body members (pictured above) and the families of children with pediatric cancer to raise awareness and help find a cure #ForTheKids!

Buckeye Kickoff:  During Welcome Week of my freshman year, OSU hosted Buckeye Kickoff to celebrate the arrival of students back to campus.  The event familiarized my suite mates and I with game day traditions, kicking off with a performance from TBDBITL and ending with a group picture of the entire stadium.  We got to meet Urban Meyer, the team, and learned lots about Buckeye football!

Exploring COSI and Downtown Columbus:  OSU D-Tix gives students the opportunity to get involved with the community surrounding campus.  My friends and I used D-Tix to travel to COSI, a family-friendly science museum and research center.  The experience gave us practice using the COTA bus system, which we have since used to travel to other locations in the Short North.  Some of our favorite places to go to in the Short North are Jeni’s, the Pizzuti Collection, and Goodale Park!

OSU vs. Xichigan Game:  OSU football games are a great way to get involved on campus.  You make a lot of new friends while taking some time to relax after a long week in school.  I’ve met a lot of students in my classes and major this way, so sometimes it’s a great opportunity to find a study buddy too!  One of the most exciting games of the year was the OSU vs. Xichigan game.  After a huge win in the rivalry game, my friends and I rushed the field with the rest of the OSU fans!

Broomball:  OSU clubs are a great way to get involved on campus.  A member of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE), Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity, Casual Sports Club and Buckeyethon, I love the connections and opportunities that come from being apart of these organizations.  Broomball was one of the first clubs I joined on campus my freshman year, with a large group on my floor forming a team.  We spent all of our Sunday nights engaged in friendly competition on ice!  I had never played this sport before, so it was a unique experience that allowed me to de-stress and bond with people in my tower at the end of each week!

Friendsgiving and Secret Santa:  Classes can get stressful during the semester, so it’s important to take care of your mental health.  To relax during the week, my friends and I will grab dinner with each other to catch up.  We also love to celebrate holidays with each other and take time to appreciate everything we have!  Our favorite traditions are Friendsgiving at Scott, Secret Santa, and late night trips to Target and Buckeye Donuts.

OIA Spring Break Trip:  During Spring 2019, I won a trip to Williamsburg, VA, through OIA.  I had the opportunity to meet lots of new students from all over the world, and learned so much about people from different cultures and backgrounds.  On the trip itself I learned a lot about the American Revolution, touring Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown, and Yorkstown.  I also had the opportunity to explore Monticello, the home of Thomas Jefferson.  I have so many fun memories from the trip, and made lots of great friends that I’m still in touch with today!

Honors & Scholars Formal:  Honors & Scholars hosted a dance for students in its program.  A group of friends on my floor attended the event together, and it was a great way to de-stress as we approached the end of the semester.   It was also a great platform for us to meet new students in our Honors classes and to appreciate how far we had come!

SEEKING ENGINEERING INTERNSHIP

It is a truth universally acknowledged that I always like to be right.  I’m the first to share my thoughts on a controversy, usually backed up with a plethora of accredited internet facts I researched on the spot.  When there’s something I don’t know, I want to research it. After I’ve researched it, I want to share what I’ve found with the world. If people question my findings, I want to argue and prove my original points, and I’ll delve into even further research to do so.  I’ve partaken in my fair share of debates, and I’ve won more of them than you’ve had slices of pizza.  :))

For these reasons, I’d like to become a Lawyer.

But when it comes to research, I don’t want to blindly accept what supposedly unbiased sources are telling me.  I want to prove exactly why they’re right (or wrong). If someone tells me I can use this pen to write with ink, I’ll scribble on a sheet of paper to verify it. But I want to do more than just prove something works.   I want to understand why it worked, why I was able to prove it. I’ll reverse engineer that pen– I’ll pop off its cap, unscrew the barrel, and shake out the spring. I’ll disassemble the remaining parts and analyze the mechanics of each one before putting it all back together, confident that I can now prove and understand the functionality behind why the pen works.

For these reasons, I’d like to become an Engineer.

My passion for research and debate, combined with my interest in learning and proving how things work, has inspired me to major in Electrical Engineering on a Pre-Law Track.  I want to pursue a career that allows me to review the new applications of electrical engineering, and to use my STEM background as a female engineer to understand and detail exactly how this technology works.  Furthermore, I want an opportunity to protect these inventions with patents, and to argue for the enforcement of these patents in court.

For these reasons, I’d like to become a Patent Attorney.

Until I can become a Patent Attorney, I want to learn more about electrical engineering under the guiding hands of professionals in the field. I want to learn more about the applications of coding and circuits in technology as an engineering student, while broadening my technical communication and writing skills for law school.  A hardworking, communicative, innovative, and keen honors student with proficiency in MATLAB, CAD Software and Microsoft Office, I am confident I have what it takes to propel your company to the next level.

For these reasons, I’d like to become your next Engineering Intern.

Year in Review

I learned a lot about myself over the course of freshman year.  I originally went to OSU thinking I’d follow in the footsteps of my mom and dad, who majored in finance and accounting respectively.  However, majoring in business made me realize I wanted to take more academically stimulating classes so I could make the most of my education.  I found challenging coursework in electrical engineering, where I discovered a major I was truly passionate about.

I’ve always loved research and debate, so combining my love of STEM with a pre-law track seemed like the right move to me.  Back when I was majoring in Finance, I was good at my classes but never felt passionate about them.  After announcing my decision to become a Patent Attorney, I’ve found myself excited to go to class each day, excited about the prospects of my future career.  I’m so happy to have found a future for myself that I’m truly invested in, not just a future that I thought was expected of me.

Along the way, I’ve met a lot of new people and created so many new memories.  My friends and I share so many experiences from freshman year, and our personalities complement each other perfectly– I’ve never felt so close to a group of people.

I want to make the most of my college experience, and a large part of this stems from trying new things.  OSU has given me amazing new opportunities from Broomball to Buckeyethon.  If you had told me in high school that I would end up at a dance marathon in college– and love it– I would’ve told you you’re crazy.  But here I am, two years later, the team captain of Buckeyethon, helping to make a difference #ForTheKids.

Overall, OSU has given me so many new experiences to be grateful for.  I’ve found a major I’m passionate about, an amazing friend group, and I continue to make new memories for myself each and every day.

I’m excited for what next year will bring!

Go Bucks! <3
