Alumni Grants for Graduate Research and Scholarship (AGGRS)

 The Graduate School’s Alumni Grants for Graduate Research and Scholarship (AGGRS) Program provides small grants up to $5,000 to support the research and scholarship of doctoral or terminal master’s degree candidates for their dissertations or theses.

 The deadline to apply is March 20.

Graduate Interdisciplinar Seminar in Literacy Studies

Please join the Graduate Interdisciplinary Seminar in Literacy Studies on Friday March 3rd from 12 noon to 1:30pm in 311 Denney Hall, for our next meeting.

The session is called “Children’s Literacies“. What do children learn when they learn to read and write? Where do they learn, when, and from whom? This session considers the literacy processes and practices, expectations and outcomes in children’s homes, communities and classrooms. All students with an interest in the study of literacy are invited to discuss its particular relevance to young people’s lives.

Roundtable Discussion with Arts and Community Organizers

The Council of Graduate Students (CGS) Arts and Culture Committee presents experts on working in the arts sector: Dr. Shoshana Goldberg-Miller and Ken Aschliman. They will inform participants about important considerations about entering the arts sector as an alternative career path to academia. The discussion is open to your questions concerning community projects and services, working with diverse populations, library services, networking and more. Students from all academic backgrounds and departments are encouraged to come.

NAGAP Graduate Student Research Grant

The Association for Graduate Enrollment Management (NAGAP) is now accepting applications for the 2017-2018 NAGAP Graduate Student Research Grant. This grant opportunity offers $2,500 of funding to current masters or doctoral level students studying any topic relevant to the field of graduate education. This may include enrollment management topics such as alumni outreach, student retention, campus support services, faculty advising, technology, leadership, financial aid, internationalization, holistic admissions, student recruitment, etc.

Recipients of the grant also receive support to attend the NAGAP conference to present their findings. Please see the NAGAP grant page for more information.

Diversity and Implicit Bias Awareness Program

for Graduate and Professional students and Postdoctoral scholars

 

The Council of Graduate Students in partnership with the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, the Office of Student Life, Student Activities, and OUAB Grad/Prof announces this year’s program for graduate and professional students as well as postdoctoral scholars on diversity and implicit bias awareness.

This is a great opportunity to dive into material that will enhance self-awareness, advocacy and leadership competencies. You will learn to understand the challenges, consider possible solutions and discover how to begin addressing the problem of underrepresentation. Implicit bias training has been shown to play an important role in the hiring and promotion of underrepresented individuals, including women. Those who complete the program will receive a certificate.

Listing completion of this program on your CV will show employers that you are knowledgeable and committed to this vital issue. Additionally, this training will help participants become better leaders who can identify talent, assemble and effectively manage diverse productive teams.

This annual event, sponsored by the EHE Office of Research, highlights the research of our graduate and undergraduate students. We have over 90 student presentations, both oral and poster, describing completed, in-progress, and proposed studies as well as literature reviews and instrument validations. The oral presentations are grouped so that similar topics are clustered. The posters will be available for viewing all day in the Cartoon Room, with half of the posters “manned” during Session 2 and the other half during Session 3. Below you will find a quick overview of presenters, times, and rooms. A website detailing information about the forum is located at u.osu.edu/ehestudentresearch/. Additional information will be added to the website up to the day of the event, and photos will be added following the event.

Fair Use in Research and Education (Workshop)

Do you use materials from third party sources in your teaching or research publications? Have you heard that all educational use is fair use but have some concerns about whether this is accurate? How can you evaluate whether something may qualify as fair use or determine if you need to seek permission? Join the Copyright Resources Center during Fair Use Week to learn how to use copyrighted material confidently and legally in your research publications and teaching.

The WAC Outstanding Writing Instruction Award

Applications due Friday, 3 March at 5 p.m.

Are you a graduate student who approaches writing instruction in an innovative way?  Do you use writing tasks or assignments to facilitate students’ learning in your field? Consider applying for the 2016 Writing Across the Curriculum Outstanding Writing Instruction Award.

The award recipient will receive a $200 monetary award furnished by the Writing Across the Curriculum Student Organization and public recognition as an outstanding instructor who uses writing to teach in innovative ways. The application deadline is Friday, 3 March at 5 p.m.

Are you eligible to apply?

  • Applicants must be a graduate student during the 2016-2017 academic year and a present or former instructor or teaching assistant in a course at OSU.
  • Those who have applied in the past but have not been awarded are eligible to apply.
  • Honorable mention recipients are eligible to apply again.
  • Past winners are ineligible to apply.

To apply, submit (in .doc, .docx or .pdf format * ) the following to osuwac@gmail.com:

  1. A one-to-two page cover letter that explains a student learning challenge you identified and the writing-based solution that you developed to address it,
  2. a syllabus from the relevant course,
  3. and a sample assignment/activity/lesson plan that shows your writing-based solution to a student learning problem (annotations are optional)
  4. (optional) a context paragraph providing necessary background for judges to interpret the sample
    *    Please title your files with your last name and first name plus file names (example: BuckeyeBrutus_syllabus).

Your submission will be judged on how well the materials:

  • Explain the innovation of new uses of writing in your course
  • Provide evidence of using writing to help students overcome learning challenges
  • Connect writing to significant concepts or knowledge in your field
  • Indicate that you improve your teaching based on assessment and feedback

The WAC team will review applications and select finalists for interviews with the WAC team. We will select the winner and honorable mentions by mid-April.
