College students who are navigating unjust circumstances in the world and on their college campuses often seek ways to address these injustices and hold institutional leaders accountable for living their institution’s espoused values of justice and equity. Two ways college students try to address these harms is through activism and advocacy. Participants will also reflect on their social identities to understand how these identities play a role in activism and advocacy.

This semester, in Graduate Teaching Toolkit, the Drake Institute’s workshop series for graduate instructors, we’ll explore each step of the course design process. Toolkit workshops are designed to support participants’ professional development, engage them in reflecting on, discussing, and sharing their teaching practices, and build community between graduate instructors on campus who are passionate about improving their teaching. Excellence in Children’s Literature: The Ohio State Newbery Award Symposium

This symposium will highlight five celebrated Black authors, who have won the prestigious John Newbery Award, widely considered the top prize for children’s literature in the United States.

This daylong symposium will include three keynotes by authors, a panel discussion with all five authors moderated by Professor Jonda C. McNair, breakout sessions and autographing sessions. The children’s literature program in the College of Education and Human Ecology, the first of its kind in the United States to offer master’s and doctoral degrees, is considered one of the strongest in the nation, largely due to the work of Charlotte S. Huck.
