Educational Studies Welcomes New Faculty for 2022!

We are excited to welcome four new faculty members as we start the autumn 2022 semester! Please join us in welcoming our new faculty!


Dr. Jasmine Abukar, Clinical Assistant Professor (HESA) and SPA Program Coordinator

  • What were you doing before your new role with Ed Studies/Where are you coming from?
    • I’m a recent graduate of EHE! I received my PhD from the Department of Teaching and Learning in Spring ’22.
  • What is a hobby of yours or a fun fact about you?
    • Fun fact: I once talked my way into a sold-out Adele concert in Barcelona.
  • What is something you are looking forward to in your new role?
    • I am a graduate of the HESA Program (MA ’14), so I’m looking forward to rejoining the community.

Dr. Venus Evans-Winters, Visiting Professor (Educational Policy and Qualitative Research)

 

  • What were you doing before your new role with Ed Studies/Where are you coming from?
    • Black Girls Research Initiatives Coordinator at AAPF and Clinical Therapist in Private Practice.
  • What is a hobby of yours or a fun fact about you?
    • I enjoy teaching mindfulness meditation to everyday people.
  • What is something you are looking forward to in your new role?
    • In my new role, I look forward to teaching and learning alongside colleagues and students alike to learn how educational research paradigms and methodologies can be used to serve and heal our nation’s most vulnerable individuals, families, and school communities.

Dr. Carly Gilsen, Associate Professor (Special Education)

 

  • What were you doing before your new role with Ed Studies/Where are you coming from?
    • Most recently, I was at Texas A&M University for the past five years as an Assistant Professor of Special Education in the Department of Educational Psychology. Before that, I was a middle school special education teacher in Atlanta prior to pursuing a Ph.D. in Special Education at Vanderbilt University.
  • What is a hobby of yours or a fun fact about you?
    • I love to run and do yoga! I have completed 7 marathons, including the Boston Marathon in 2018 and most recently the Woodlands Marathon in Houston, Texas, in March 2022. The picture is from a 200-mile relay race I did from Chattanooga to Nashville, Tennessee, in 2015. I have also been practicing yoga for more than 10 years and am a certified yoga instructor.
  • What is something you are looking forward to in your new role?
    • I can’t wait to get to know my future colleagues and students at OSU! I’m also excited for my first Buckeye game because I heard the band is pretty decent. 🙂

Dr. Kamontá Heidelburg, Assistant Professor (School Psychology)

 

  • What were you doing before your new role with Ed Studies/Where are you coming from?
    • Assistant Professor at The University of Buffalo, SUNY.
  • What is a hobby of yours or a fun fact about you?
    • First Black man to graduate from UC’s School Psychology doctoral program.
  • What is something you are looking forward to in your new role?
    • In my new role, I am looking forward to increasing the number of Black men in School Psychology.
