Research Opportunity Related to Youth and Juvenile Courts

The Results Management Team (RMT), part of the Center for Education and Training for Employment (CETE), in the College of Education and Human Ecology is seeking a student and/or faculty partner to be part of a team investigating the impact of a formal training program on the ability of a county juvenile court to develop and modify programming to maximize benefits for court referred youth.  We envision two primary data collection activities subject to IRB approval.  First, we propose to conduct a survey of court personnel in juvenile courts in Ohio.  This survey will focus on the capacity of courts to collect and use data to drive program improvement planning.  A second data collection activity will involve collecting data from court personnel who participate in a formal training program.  The second data collection activity will focus on the extent to which the training program results in enhanced capacities among court personnel.  We believe this research will result in two primary products related to scholarship including one or two publications in an appropriate peer-reviewed journal(s) and the development of a federal grant application to test the efficacy of the model in multiple courts based on the data collected in the current project.  We are also in a position to collect additional data relative to specific student faculty interests.  If interested, please contact Melissa Ross at ross.565@osu.edu.

Bringing Suicide Prevention Out of the Shadows

On Monday, August 21st, a solar eclipse was visible across Central Ohio. Through breaks in the clouds, students, faculty and staff of Ohio State watched from the top of parking garages, on the oval and scattered along sidewalks as an ominous darkness covered campus. The importance of not looking directly at the eclipse and using protective eclipse glasses had been stressed on the news for days leading up to the event. The OSU Suicide Prevention Program decided to combine the need for this safety precaution with a campaign to promote their important mission.


The OSU Suicide Prevention Program distributed 1,300 pairs of licensed eclipse glasses at the Student Involvement Fair. Another 700 pairs were given to faculty and staff who have been involved in suicide prevention efforts in the past (REACH, RUOK? Buckeyes, advisory boards, STEP faculty mentors, etc.) The glasses were given out along with the slogan Bringing Suicide Prevention Out of the Shadows. Students had to follow @OSUREACH on Twitter, Instagram or Facebook to receive glasses. This effort brought attention to the important work of the OSU Suicide Prevention program and helped to bring suicide prevention to the forefront of students’ minds.

Graduate Administrative Associate Position Description  2017-2018 (9/5/17)



The Department of Engineering Education will celebrate its two-year anniversary on November 6, 2017. With approximately 250 faculty, staff, and student employees, we are the academic home of Ohio State’s first-year engineering program, undergraduate multidisciplinary capstone design, and engineering technical communications courses. In the autumn semester of 2016, EED offered instruction to almost 4000 undergraduate students.


In addition to maintaining high-quality undergraduate student programs, the EED is developing a proposal to create a graduate program where admitted graduate students will earn Ph.D.’s in Engineering Education. The development of this program establishes a firm foundation for an expansion of our research, which will position the EED as a department where undergraduate and graduate education complement research and practice in the development of diverse career pathways for our engineering students.


We would like to hire a Graduate Administrative Associate to assist us in moving the department to the next level. The GAA will assist with event planning, marketing material development, social media editing, and streamlining various processes (such as teaching assistant hiring). Other responsibilities include database creation and maintenance, research grant administration, and miscellaneous office tasks. The GAA may also oversee student employees.



The GAA is required to have strong written and verbal communication skills; strong interpersonal skills; strong attention to detail; and acceptance as a graduate student at The Ohio State University. Competence in Microsoft EXCEL, PowerPoint, and Word are required. Experience in project management and databases are desired. The applicant must be in good academic standing.

Working Hours and Compensation

Average twenty (20) hours per week per semester, which is a 50% appointment; must commit to work two academic semesters minimum.

2018 Ford Foundation Fellowships Programs for Achieving Excellence in College and University Teaching

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine is accepting applications for the 2018 Ford Foundation Fellowships Programs for Achieving Excellence in College and University Teaching. Full eligibility information and online applications are available here.

Through its Fellowship Programs, the Ford Foundation seeks to increase the diversity of the nation’s college and university faculties by increasing their ethnic and racial diversity, to maximize the educational benefits of diversity, and to increase the number of professors who can and will use diversity as a resource for enriching the education of all students.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • U.S. citizens, nationals, permanent residents (holders of a Permanent Resident Card), or individuals granted deferred action status under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Program (DACA) program, and political asylees and refugees regardless of race, national origin, religion, gender, age, disability, or sexual orientation.
  • Individuals planning a career in teaching and research at the college or university level in a research-based field of science, social science or humanities.


  • Predoctoral- $24,000 per year for three years
  • Dissertation- $25,000 for one year
  • Postdoctoral- $45,000 for one year

Awardees will have expenses paid to attend at least one Conference of Ford Fellows. Approximately 65 predoctoral, 36 dissertation, and 24 postdoctoral fellowships will be awarded.
