Please join the Graduate Interdisciplinary Seminar in Literacy Studies on Friday, November 4, from 12 noon to 1:30 pm in 311 Denney Hall, for our next meeting.
The session is called “Service Learning Literacy.” Service learning seeks to increase awareness of civic duty by combining guided classroom instruction with community service, often by promoting literacy. What are some of the common approaches? Who benefits and how? What kinds of reading and writing are valued? All students with an interest in the study of literacy are invited to a roundtable featuring a trio of guests experienced in service learning initiatives.
Our discussion will also build on a lecture by Kolleen Guy on Monday, October 31, co-sponsored by Literacy Studies and the Department of History.
If you can’t come to this meeting, but want to stay in the loop, drop Michael a line, and we will add you to the GradSem listserv.
See you soon,
Michael Harwick, Maryna Matlock, Susan Strayer, and Jamie Teeple
