Career

As a chemical engineer, I have many jobs that I can apply to and they do not necessarily have to be in the engineering world; however, I would like to be able to stay in the engineering world. As I was researching jobs that would allow me to stay in the engineering profession, I came across a process engineer from P&G. P&G is known for its varying products and is also really good at letting people try many different posts in their company, as long as the employee qualifies for it.

Here is a screenshot of the job posting and the qualifications for it.

This job allows me, as an engineer, to work with people from Process Development, Manufacturing, Finance, Purchasing, Planning, and MPD Process in order to understand and be able to complete different and new projects from start to finish. As a process engineer, you are given full ownership of your project in order for you to deliver change and results as the project continues. In order to get this job, not only would I have to meet each qualifications, I would also have to exceed them because there are thousands others who are applying to the exact same job as me. First of all, I would have to graduate college with a BS degree in Chemical Engineering, as it is the preferred field. I need to have at least two industry experience, at least two leadership roles, a few special skills, be willing to travel plenty, and willing to relocate to Cincinnati.

In order to be qualified for this job, here is my to do list:

  1. Participate in two or more co-ops/internships during the summer and semester
  2. Earn two or more leadership roles that are relevant towards my degree
    1. Be able to lead a team through a technical process or equipment
    2. Be able to lead a team through addressing a community’s basic needs, such as clean water, heat, shelter, etc.
  3. Improve in my ability to speak french
  4. Improve my ability in a coding language, whether it be MATLAB, Java, or Solidworks
  5. Graduate with a BS in Chemical Engineering

In order to accomplish each of these things, I need to be really active in my community. This is really tough right now due to COVID but I am really hoping that things will go back to normal soon and I will be able to participate in engineers without borders to gain the humanitarian experience. I would like to participate in a co-op that is in another country, specifically France, in order to improve my french.  I would like to do another co-op in another city that broadens how I view the world and improves my ability to work with people for all kinds of different backgrounds and allows me to gain experience in a technical field. Using internships, I can possibly work on a plant somewhere to be able to learn how to use and lead machinery. To improve my coding skills, I need to take a coding class that is specific towards one of the languages listed above. To improve my leadership skills, I could be a part of the ENR council and on the board of a few other clubs or associations that are provided at OSU.

I think I will be able to achieve all of these goals in order to be extremely qualified for the job of a process engineer.

Artifacts

Being in college has forced me to look at life in a good, different way; especially since we have to do most of our classes virtually due to COVID-19. Everyone is finding new ways to adjust to being far from their families and in a completely new environment. When first coming here, it was tough adjusting to being on my own. It felt strange to not have to tell my parents where I was going constantly. But once I finally got used to it, I have learned that I really enjoy being on my own and I can manage myself very well. I was a little worried that with all of the newfound freedom I was going to encounter, I would not able able to manage my time but I have not found that to be true. Although, procrastination is something that I do not think will ever go away.

Zoom is something that I do not think I will ever completely adjust to. I find it extremely difficult to pay attention to some of my classes because over zoom I am next to my phone and because of that I always get distracted. While it is nice that I can just stay in bed for early morning lectures, I find it hard to focus because I am tired, so I fall asleep. Because it has been about a month into the school year, I am starting to implement what to do and what not to do during classes in order for me to stay focused.

One of the more interesting classes I am currently taking is my fundamentals of engineering. Through that class, we have been taught how to use excel. Now before this class, I knew how to do basic things like write out a table and create a graph; however, I now know how to write complicated equations into excel and have it do all of the calculations for me! I, honestly, never thought that excel could do things like this. It’s such an important tool that really simplifies a lot of tasks.

Due to all of the late-night stress, I have found that I needed an way to relax and spend some time outside during the evening. I have always enjoyed walking around in the dark but college campuses are not always safe for females. So, my suite ate and I took skateboards from our houses and taught ourselves how to skateboard! The first few times were not good and we could barely balance ourselves for a couple of seconds before falling off. But because it is so relaxing to go out and board at night, we went out every night for a week and kept going. Now, we can kind of board pretty well. I have wiped out and gotten many a injuries but I do not let that stop me. There is no calmer feeling that being out at night, listening to music, and feeling the wind across your face as you board. I am extremely happy that I learned this skill and I plan to use it for many years to come.

About Me

Hi! My name is Zoe Edmondson and I am currently a freshman at OSU majoring in Environmental Engineering and participating in the ENR Scholars program. I love hanging with my friends and family, sewing, painting, baking (although I am pretty terrible at it), swimming, and watching movies/tv shows. I am a very kinesthetic learner. I always have to be moving around in order for me to focus, whether it be fidgeting, walking around or even taking notes, some part of me has to be moving. This also makes me an active learner. It is much easier for me to learn things when I have a conversation about a topic rather than being lectured about it.

While my current pre-major is environmental engineering because I want to find ways to improve the pollution in the air and in water, I am heavily considering chemical engineering because I have always been fascinated with make-up and skincare and I think working in that field would be amazing. I hope that OSU will provide me with a well-rounded eduction where I can work with different people and improve my collaboration skills.

I was born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio with my mom, dad, and two younger sisters. My parents are both immigrants so we have family in different countries. Because of this, I have been lucky enough to travel to these places and witness the different lifestyles people live. I have always loved traveling and experiencing new things. One of my favorite things to do is swim. I absolutely love the water and could spend all day every day there if I could. On a hot summer day after a walk outside, it is one of the best ways to cool down. It makes me pretty sad that some people treat water as if it is a trash can and throw their leftovers in it.

I love the outdoors. Especially in the fall when all the leaves are different colors and the trees look like a painting. Whenever I am stressed or worried about something, going outside on a walk or a hike and finding a creek is one of the most relaxing things ever. There is something about nature that is very calming to me and that is why I love it.
