Llama Sacrifices

In the Inca society, llamas were often sacrificed to a god. Surprisingly, today there are still some llama sacrifices that take place.

In the Inca society, llamas were often sacrificed to a god. Surprisingly, today there are still some llama sacrifices that take place. (Seidler,1973) Inti Raymi was a festival at the time of the Inca Empire in Cuzco. Llamas would be sacrificed to honor the sun god in order for the sun to return to ensure good crops for the following year. This happened on the winter solstice. Today there is an Inti Raymi festival that takes place, but actors are chosen to represent the Sapa Inca and other people in the ceremony, the actors stage the llama sacrifice, there is no actual llama killing.
