Welcome to the Exercise and Behavioral Medicine Laboratory!

The Exercise and Behavioral Medicine Laboratory (EBML) produces research that directly benefits human health. We aim to improve the underlying determinants of health, quality of life, and well-being through multi-component behavioral interventions in a variety of clinical populations.

TACKLING THE ‘ADHERENCE CHALLENGE’

We recognize that the efficacy of exercise and diet to help prevent and manage chronic disease is well supported by clinical evidence. However, many people struggle to adhere to exercise and diet prescriptions. Consequently, the effectiveness of behavioral interventions depends on individuals adopting and maintaining healthy practices. We are tackling the ‘adherence challenge’ through studying the biopsychosocial determinants of adherence, theory-based mechanisms of motivation and maintenance, and effects of behavioral interventions on clinical outcomes.

BRIDGING THE GAP FROM CLINIC TO COMMUNITY

Much effort has been made to establish the efficacy of behavioral interventions in controlled research settings. Given the immense economic and public health burden of chronic disease worldwide, it is now a global priority to study the translation of efficacious interventions from clinical settings into the community in order to reach those who need support for change. We are bridging the clinic-community gap through employing multi-disciplinary research teams and fostering valuable community partnerships.
