Second Year G.O.A.L.S.

Global awareness can come from a variety of sources, including classes and first-hand experience in places with cultures different to my own. One unexpected way I have experienced learning about different cultures is through my ASL class. In this class, we learn about American Deaf culture and how it differs from hearing culture. However, learning about cultures not present in America is also important. That is why I have committed to a service learning trip to Ghana in the summer of 2019. I hope that this experience allows me to experience the cultural practices in Ghana and learn more about how other countries and places differ from my own.

In pursuit of experience with original inquiry, I have joined the Social Neurochemistry research lab at Ohio State. I have just finished my first year in the lab and plan on continuing next semester in hopes that I will be allowed more freedom and responsibility as I work my way through the ranks. I have already been able to learn so much by contributing to the research the lab is doing and am excited to learn more and become more involved.

My plans for my future classes and activities exhibit a value of academic enrichment. My major and minor have been specifically chosen to challenge me and prepare me for medical school and future career. Additionally, I have chosen to take honors and upper level classes when possible and general education classes that are applicable to my field of study and future plans.

While I do not currently hold any explicit leadership titles in the organizations I am involved in, I still consider myself a leader and am establishing my leadership skills. The first two years of my collegiate career have consisted of leading by example and stepping up when other leaders need assistance or support.

Over my time at Ohio State thus far, I have been involved in several service opportunities. One such activity is volunteering at Star House as a tutor for homeless youth. This opportunity has allowed me to break down a lot of stereotypes I held about homeless people. I have also been a volunteer at Nationwide Children’s Hospital on the patient units, so I have had the opportunity to interact with a lot of patients, families, and staff. This has allowed me to gain a greater insight into this type of setting. I also serve at The Bridge Community Center tutoring the children of refugee families. I am now able to understand more of the differences between my life and the lives of people in their situations.

Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. G.O.A.L.S.

Using the G.O.A.L.S. acronym, I am able to gain insight about the kinds of experiences I want to have in my college career. Global awareness can come in many shapes and forms. I believe that any experience that involves learning about or immersing yourself in a culture different than your own will lead to a greater global awareness. To accomplish this, I plan on participating in a study abroad program that occurs in a culture that I am interested in learning about. Original inquiry can be achieved through any experience that pushes you to participate in critical and creative thinking. To provide myself with these kind of experiences, I plan on getting involved as a research assistant in a lab and staying committed to that lab so that by the time I am a junior or senior, I will have more freedom. Academic enrichment can be accomplished through taking challenging coursework and spending time pursuing scholarly thought outside of class. I will attempt to gain academic enrichment by taking as many honors classes as I feel I am capable of and participating in extracurriculars that compliment my schoolwork. Leadership development can be accomplished by taking initiative and changing things on campus for the better. I intend on fulfilling this experience by maintaining active membership in the organizations that interest me and applying for leadership positions in these organizations as the opportunities arise. Service engagement is an important part of the college experience that involves giving your time and resources to others. In order to engage in service, I plan on participating in a Buck-I-SERV trip while I am an undergraduate student and volunteer at local outreach programs in Columbus.

Career

[“Career” is where you can collect information about your experiences and skills that will apply to your future career.  Like your resume, this is information that will evolve over time and should be continually updated.   For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. Artifacts

University Resource Video

This artifact represents an experience I had in my survey class. We were assigned the task of working in a group to make a commercial for a given resource on campus. So, three of my classmates and I visited the Wexner Center for the Arts and created a commercial advertising the services it offers. Through this experience, I was able to not only learn more about the Wexner Center for the Arts, but also gained valuable information about video editing and working with groups of people whom I may not know very well. These are valuable skills that I will be able to utilize on future group projects for classes and in my everyday life.

About Me

I am a second year neuroscience major at the Ohio State University. I am on the pre- medicine track, and hope to eventually become a pediatrician because I have a passion for both children and science. I am particularly interested in the brain and how it controls our perception of the world and our behavior, which is why I chose neuroscience as my major. I am a member of Pre-Medicine club at Ohio State and am also involved in the neuroscience honorary, Nu Rho Psi.  I also enjoy volunteering with children at my local church and with local outreach programs through Columbus’s H2O church.
