Global awareness can come from a variety of sources, including classes and first-hand experience in places with cultures different to my own. One unexpected way I have experienced learning about different cultures is through my ASL class. In this class, we learn about American Deaf culture and how it differs from hearing culture. However, learning about cultures not present in America is also important. That is why I have committed to a service learning trip to Ghana in the summer of 2019. I hope that this experience allows me to experience the cultural practices in Ghana and learn more about how other countries and places differ from my own.
In pursuit of experience with original inquiry, I have joined the Social Neurochemistry research lab at Ohio State. I have just finished my first year in the lab and plan on continuing next semester in hopes that I will be allowed more freedom and responsibility as I work my way through the ranks. I have already been able to learn so much by contributing to the research the lab is doing and am excited to learn more and become more involved.
My plans for my future classes and activities exhibit a value of academic enrichment. My major and minor have been specifically chosen to challenge me and prepare me for medical school and future career. Additionally, I have chosen to take honors and upper level classes when possible and general education classes that are applicable to my field of study and future plans.
While I do not currently hold any explicit leadership titles in the organizations I am involved in, I still consider myself a leader and am establishing my leadership skills. The first two years of my collegiate career have consisted of leading by example and stepping up when other leaders need assistance or support.
Over my time at Ohio State thus far, I have been involved in several service opportunities. One such activity is volunteering at Star House as a tutor for homeless youth. This opportunity has allowed me to break down a lot of stereotypes I held about homeless people. I have also been a volunteer at Nationwide Children’s Hospital on the patient units, so I have had the opportunity to interact with a lot of patients, families, and staff. This has allowed me to gain a greater insight into this type of setting. I also serve at The Bridge Community Center tutoring the children of refugee families. I am now able to understand more of the differences between my life and the lives of people in their situations.
