G.O.A.L.S.

Global Awareness:  I lived in an area where there were a lot of immigrants, and unfortunately sometimes they came from countries that hated each, Israel and Palestine, Iran and Iraq, etc., but my high school always tried to bring these people together to show them not every person from a country or race that you don’t like is terrible. As a school we were extremely tolerant towards each other and everybody respected each other’s opinion no matter how much they disagreed. We wanted the same thing, in our school, as the allies for diversity and the sustained dialogue groups want at OSU. At OSU these groups are even more important. You have people who have been sheltered their entire life coming together, and meeting people of different backgrounds they have never met before, like at my school but there are 60,000 people not 900, which is why I have joined these groups.

Original Inquiry:  As an actuarial science major research isn’t a thing I plan on doing during my college career.  My career does not have anything to practically research so while knowing how to research is a valuable skill in general to arts and science students it is not to me necessarily.

Academic Enrichment:  My intended program of study will challenge me considerably.  I will take honors version of every class I can, GE or major course.  Also I am accelerating the usual path of an actuarial science major.  I will take my first test this spring even though most students don’t take their first test till their second year at least.  This will let me get an internship, if I pass the first test, the summer after my second year hopefully which would let me learn even more about the profession of an actuary and get me even more prepared for my future job.

Leadership Development:  Right now I am a supervisor at a grocery store that I have worked at for over a year. Most of my job is to be in charge in 5 to 7 cashiers a night and to make sure they are doing what they are supposed to and to make sure they get out as soon as they can while also making our store is presentable for the people the next day.  I also will hopefully have an actuarial internship after my second year which will replace my job, but only for the summers.

Service Engagement:  I am active in the neighborhood improvement going on in Weinland Park, either with habitat for humanity or volunteering at the 5th avenue bird sanctuary.  I also volunteer at MAP furniture bank, to build furniture for low income families and and the mid ohio food bank or the franklin park conservatory’s urban garden/farm.  I regularly look for more opportunities to volunteer that are sponsored by the columbus foundation, which is the organization that first told me about the Weinland Park neighborhood improvement.
