East Ohio Women in Agriculture Conference

Ohio State University Extension will host the 9th Annual East Ohio Women in Agriculture Conference. The conference is planned for Friday, April 5, 2024, from 9 AM – 4 PM at the Shisler Conference Center, 1680 Madison Ave, Wooster, OH 44691. All women and young women (high school age) who are interested, involved in, or want to become involved with food, agricultural, or natural resources production or small business are encouraged to attend.

The conference program features a networking fair and twenty breakout sessions presented by OSU Extension educators, agricultural producers, and partner agencies. Sessions this year are focused around five themes: Business & Marketing, Home & Family, Plants & Pollinators, Animals, and Special Interest. The conference keynote speaker will be Bonnie Ayars of Ayars Family Farm & Ice Cream. She will talk about “Perfecting the Art of Connection” from her experiences as a farm wife, mother, grandmother, dairy educator, and ice cream entrepreneur.

Interested individuals can register for the conference online at go.osu.edu/eowia2024 .Cost of the conference is $60 for adult participants and $30 for students. Conference fee includes conference participation, breakfast, lunch, conference handouts, and door prizes. Deadline for registration is Friday, March 22.

East Ohio Women in Agriculture Conference

The eighth annual East Ohio Women in Agriculture Conference will be Friday, March 24, 2023 from 9:00 AM – 3:30 PM at the Shisler Event Center on The Ohio State University’s Wooster Campus, 1880 Madison Avenue, Wooster, OH 44691.

A participant at last year’s conference wrote: “This was my first time attending. I look forward to attending again! Appreciate such relevant topics.”

This year’s program will feature 16 break-out sessions in 4 tracks presented by OSU Extension educators, farmers, and partner agencies including: Business & Finance, Plants & Animals, Home & Family, and Special Interest. Farm and Dairy editor-in-chief, Rebecca Miller will deliver this year’s keynote presentation, Clinging to context in a noisy world: don’t lose sight of your “why.”

New this year is a Youth Symposium opportunity for high school and college students to present their research, SAE, capstone, thesis, or other study projects.

We’re back! The East Ohio Women in Agriculture Conference will be Friday, March 25, 2022 from 9:00 AM – 3:30 PM. This year we will be hosted at Ohio FFA Camp Muskingum near Carrollton, Ohio. And we’d love to see you there!

This one-day conference is a great place to learn, share, and network.  Be surrounded by other women who are facing the same day-to-day ups, downs, adventures, and dilemmas as you.

This year’s conference features 16 break-out sessions within four themes: Natural Resources, Plants & Animals, Home & Family, and Special Interest.

The 2021 East Ohio Women in Agriculture Program Series has offered (and continues to offer) a variety of financial, production, and home-related topics to help you as a woman in agriculture. Farm Income Tax Update – Barry Ward, OSU Extension – This update arms farm taxpayers with tax information on current critical issues including insight into new COVID related legislation.

Cooking with Cast Iron – Christine Kendle, OSU Extension – Are you not sure what pan to use? How to season it? How you should care for your cast iron cookware? This class is for you!

QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) Suicide Prevention – Panel – QPR includes how to “ask a question to save a life,” recognizing warning signs, and referring for help. This session recording is available upon request only by contacting Erika Lyon at lyon.@osu.edu.

The Mystery of Fruit Tree Pruning – Paul Snyder, OARDC Secrest Arboretum – This session covers the basics of how and when to prune fruit trees, highlighting the most common backyard fruit tree, the apple tree. (This will be available soon on the play list.)

April 8 – Bury Seeds, Not Stress—Sarah Noggle and Bridget Britton, OSU Extension – When you live where you work, there are stressors that can go unacknowledged. Agriculture life brings unique challenges to us personally and professionally. Join us as we identify what makes us unique and talk about coping strategies.

April 22 – Reaching Your Educational Goals – Dennis DeCamp, OSU Extension – Regardless of age, educational opportunities are always available.  Explore options for obtaining and funding education to meet your goals while maintaining a balanced life.

May 13 – Veterinarians:  Building a Relationship & Knowing When to Call  –  A working relationship with your veterinarian can teach you when it’s appropriate to try something at home vs. having them out on a call to improve your farm’s husbandry & production.

May 27 – He Said, She Said – Emily Marrison, OSU Extension – Women in agriculture often work with men in agriculture. Explore ways to improve interpersonal communication for more productive work settings and peaceful home environments.

Field Days, 5:30 PM meal/ 6:00-8:30 PM program:

April Field Day – Tuesday, April 6 – Soils & Sustainable Agriculture with Erika Lyon and Heather Neikirk, OSU Extension and Clint Finney, USDA-NRCS (Jefferson County) – What is sustainable for you? Dig into improving the health of your soils and the basics of soil testing services and kits. Explore sustainability and stewardship practices and opportunities for utilization in small farm animal and plant-based enterprises. Please register by Friday, April 2.

May Field Day – Tuesday, May 4 – Raising Livestock on 5 Acres or Less with Sandy Smith, OSU Extension (Carroll County) – So you have some land and you want some extra income or a supply of food for your family. This session will investigate all of your options and possibilities. 

July Field Day – Wednesday, July 14 –  Hands-On Tractor Operation Skill-Builder with Dee Jepsen, OSU Farm Safety Specialist (Stark County) – Examining the utility of the compact tractor – safety, parts, color coding, hand signals and operation will be discussed in this interactive audience driven session.

Learn about a wide variety of financial, production, and home-related topics to help you as a woman in agriculture. Attend one or all programs in the series!

2020 East Ohio Women in Agriculture Conference – Cancelled

Confirmation of the coronavirus in the state of Ohio has led to public health concerns related to disease transmission. As a result, The Ohio State University has been proactively implementing protocols for ensuring the safety and health for our students and clientele.

After consultation with the college and university leadership, the 2020 East Ohio Women in Agriculture Conference to be held March 19, 2020 in Massillon has been cancelled. Recognizing that our attendees are located around the state, we are following guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control, Ohio Department of Health, and the university in being aggressively proactive to prevent the potential spread of communicable respiratory illness.

All registered participants and speakers have been contacted. We are working to set a date for 2021 and will let you know as soon as it is confirmed.

Registration is still open for the 7th Annual East Ohio Women in Agriculture Conference will be THURSDAY, March 19 from 9:00 am – 3:45 pm. The event will again be held at R. G. Drage Career Technical Center, 2800 Richville Drive SE, Massillon, OH 44646.

This year’s program will feature 18 break-out sessions presented by OSU Extension educators, farmers, and partner agencies including: Business & Finance; Plants & Animals; Communication; Home & Family; and Special Interest. As always, Ohio FFA state officers will be teaching one of the communication sessions open to all participants.

Farm and Dairy Editor, Rebecca Miller is the conference featured keynote speaker. Her presentation will engage and enlighten participants on “Clinging to context in a noisy world: don’t lose sight of your “why”. We can’t wait to see you there!
