The CLS Program in Suzhou, China provides an intensive 8-week language learning environment set in a mid-size (by Chinese standard) metropolitan center that combines 2,500 years of history with a large scale internationalized industrial and high tech development zone and a robust leisurely life style famous throughout China. Students receive a minimum of 20 hours per week of classroom instruction and participate in extensive community engagement activities. The CLS program in Suzhou incorporates a language policy that requires scholarship recipients to speak only Chinese during all program activities.

CLS Suzhou’s local partner is Suzhou University. Classes will be divided between Suzhou University’s two campuses: its “Old Town” Campus (Gusu campus) and “New District” Campus (Dushuhu campus). Participants in both locations live in a business hotel with dorm room like facilities with a short walk and/or short bus ride to the university campus. Between these two sites, students will be able to experience Suzhou’s exquisite historical architecture, numerous world class traditional gardens and distinctive “South of the River” lifestyle as well as its newer hi-tech industrial corridor providing an interesting and encouraging environment for learning the language and practicing what you have learned in rich and authentic contexts.

The CLS curriculum in Suzhou incorporates extensive co-curricular activities including excursions to explore culturally significant sites and community engagement activities where participants utilize their knowledge and skills and practice accomplishing appropriate tasks in effective and positive ways.
