Year in Review

My first year here has been amazing. I’ve met a lot of people and made a lot of new friends and connections. I got involved with a couple clubs, including pre dent club and health points. I kind of wish I got more involved with extra curriculars, but I plan on making up for it next year. So far I’ve changed majors twice, but now i think I’m gonna stay with biology. I’m excited to continue my education here next year.

G.O.A.L.S.

Global Awareness: Throughout my college career, I have taken advantage of some of the interesting general education classes that OSU offers to increase my understanding of cultural differences. For example, in psychology 1100, we discuss how culture plays a role in how people behave later in life. These classes help me to put myself in other people’s shoes to determine why they act the way they do. Also, my participation in the Health Points club has allowed me to interact and help people in need, giving a better appreciation for my own upbringing.

Original Inquiry: Although I am not interested in participating in traditional research, the science classes I have taken have given me insight on many research practices through laboratory experience. I have gained a better understanding of the scientific process and all of its steps. Furthermore, general education classes, such as theater 2100, have provided me with experience in creative productions and performances, which has provided me with a greater appreciation for the arts.

Academic Enrichment: Perfecting my study habits to maximize my ability to retain information has been one of my goals throughout college. In an attempt to achieve this goal, I conducted a interview with my cousin, who obtained a bachelor’s degree in computer science and is currently pursuing his master’s. Derek suggested that I complete all of my studying and schoolwork every morning until it becomes a routine. This routine helped him stay ahead in all of his classes, so he did not have to cram before exams. I plan on integrating this information into my own study habits to hopefully help me better learn the material for my classes.

Leadership Development: OSU has forced me to sharpen my leadership skills in class through participation in group projects and class presentations. Outside of class, I have attended a couple leadership workshop and helped coordinate a few club activity to improve this skill. I plan on continuing my participation in these clubs, and possibly running for an executive position to further my leadership practice.

Service Engagement: I have been volunteering in my community since middle school, but I was never completely invested until I performed a service project for Hannah’s Treasure Chest. This non-profit organization provides care packages for children in need. Through my participation in this project, I received a since of duty to help my community. Unfortunately, socioeconomic gaps exist. I feel obligated to do my part to aid those who are less well off.

Career

Throughout my years leading up to college, I have formed a detailed plan for my future. I plan to attend dental school (preferably OSU) and reside in Colorado afterwards. I have learned about resources for exploring possible career paths including explorehealthcareers.org which gives detailed information on career paths in the health field and the Career Counseling and Support Services at the Younkin Success Center which can also provide information on different majors and career paths. Even though I came into OSU knowing my major and future career path, I have pondered possible plan B options such as joining the work force after a bachelor’s degree in physics if I am not able to get into dental school. To maintain a healthy lifestyle here, I go to the gym on a regular basis and make sure to eat 3 moderately healthy meals a day. For the most part, I believe I can stay on this schedule; however, I know that I might slack off a little around exam times. Throughout my college journey, I won’t hesitate to reach out to upperclassmen and faculty members to get advice because I know that all my questions will directly affect my future. I have many older family members that go to OSU who will be able to help me if I ever have any questions. Next semester, I would definitely like to get more involved in volunteering opportunities and different clubs, and hopefully throughout my next few years at OSU, get involved in different research opportunities that will further my knowledge in my intended career path.
