Global Engagement Night: Chinese New Year

Event: Global Engagement Night: Chinese New year

Time: 6-7pm

Date: February 9,2021

I attended this global engagement night that focuses around the topic of Chinese New Year. In the Chinese calendar, every year represents an animal, and 2021 will be the year of the ox. The color red is a sign of lucky around the New Years and very often older adults will give young children money in red packets that symbolizes luck. It is also common to wear red on the new year to symbolize good fortune for the rest of the year. One superstitious that many kids learn is that if you cry on the first day of the new year, you would cry everyday. Many Chinese celebrates the new year by eating fish because it symbolizes good luck and fortune. The average duration of the New Year is around 14 days where people celebrate by dancing lion dances. The celebration of Chinese New Year is one of the biggest holidays in China. This event broadened my knowledge about Chinese New Year because I did not know different parts of China celebrates it different ways.

Sustainable Living in College Reflection

Sustainable Living in College Reflection

Campus Reflection

Wednesday, November 13, 2019 6:00-7:00, Smith Steeb Glass Classroom

I attended this event in hopes of learning more about how I can live my life the greenest while being a college student. This event relates to my personal goal because sustainability is such an important factor for us and for future generations. The actions we act now will affect us near the future and the future generations. At this event, many sustainability actions were talked about for college students. Some actions that college student can make to increase sustainability includes using MyCups that every freshman were given, recycle bottles of water in dorms ( this is especially easy due to the accessible recycling bin in our room),  shutting down lights when it is not needed, and turning off water when it is not being used. OSU is also trying to reduce waste by using iPad in hopes to reduce paper waste to sustain the earth.  If everyone can contribute to something a little each day, then these little things will add up to big things in the long run. One fun fact I learned at this event was since freshman are not allowed to have cars on campus, we are contributing to less waste by walking to classes everyday as well.

Ohio State Graduate and Professional School Fair Reflection

Ohio State Graduate and Professional School Fair

Professional Development Reflection

Wednesday, November 6, 2019 4:30-6:00 Ohio Union Performance Hall

I attended this fair to get an insight of the possible choices I have after achieving my bachelors degree in a few years. This event relates to my professional goal because many schools that attended were in my radar to apply near the future like OSU College of Medicine. Before attending I had questions about acceptance criteria, what makes an application stand out, any minors to add, how long is this career path, what is the starting salary, and etc. I went up to the table with representatives from OSU College of Medicine and all my questions were throughly answered. At this moment, I am still debating if medical field is the track I want to take so asking these questions helped me narrow down my choices. I discovered OSU College of Optometry because it also interests me and I had gained useful information as well. Since Optometry and Medicine all revolves around science, the classes that I am taking will count as the criteria in the application, but the sooner I figure out my path, the better I am off with my major. This event was really helpful and I wish to attend more events like this near the future.

American Factory Event Reflection

American Factory

Academic Event Reflection

October 20, 2019, 8-10 Smith-Steeb Basement

I attended this event with my roommate in Smith-Steeb’s basement on October 20, 2019. This event was a movie review of “American Factory” and relates to International Affairs because this movie is a documentary based off of a Chinese billionaire that opens a factory that was once General Motors but now called FuYao, that specialized in glassware for motors, in Sandusky, OH. This movie informed us about international news and how people from different cultures come together to achieve mission’s together.

At first I did not know what to expect in the movie, I thought it was just about a Chinese billionaire that just basically built his empire in Sandusky, OH, but it is more than that, it is about how people can come together and work to achieve a common goal. This movie really impacted me in many ways because it shows how different cultures have different standards of working conditions. In China, many workers work during the weekends and whereas in the Western Culture, most people do not work in the weekends. One quote that was said by Ceo Dewang that really inspired me is “the most important thing right now is not how much we earn, it is how the Americans view the Chinese.” As the word is changing and people advocate for more equality, I think this quote was really powerful in terms of the work behind workers and others to achieve the state of equality.

This event intersected my personal goals because in the future I hope to be as successful as what Ceo Dewang has envisioned this company. I can see the amount of hardwork people put through to achieve one goal and

The Psychology Career, Internship/Volunteer, and Graduate School Fair

Psychology Fair

Professional Development Reflection

September 24, 2019 5-7pm

The purpose of this event was to collection information from various different organizations about volunteer, internship, graduate school and job opportunities for psychology majors. Many organizations and school like Nationwide Children’s Hospital, the University of Michigan, Kent State University, Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction – Behavioral Health Services, and Pathfinder Progress attended. This event relates to my coursework because I am taking Abnormal Psychology this semester and I am very interested in going to medical school in the near future. This event directly correlated with my professional goals because I hope to achieve my goal to become a psychiatrist.

This event motivated me to be more active in college and join many clubs to distinguish myself with other people when I am applying to medical schools. Applying to medical school is just like how I applied to OSU but I have to show off my talents more in depth and explain why I want to go to medical school.  I learned that the process of applying to medical school was similar in applying to college but a little more work, there are criteria’s like interviewing that is held when I apply to medical school.

Before attending this event, I have some general questions about applying to medical school. My questions were answered by a representative from the University of Michigan. I wondered how long is the process and what is the average schooling required. This event increased my knowledge of applying to medical school and I would definitely go to another event like this in the future.
