Semester 3 – Volunteering #3

I volunteered at Feed My Starving Children for 1 1/2 hours. The organization provides nutrient-packed foods for hungry people in the world. When volunteering, I helped pack and seal food. As a result, I learned that I am able to lead people to be very efficient in a systematic process. This has made me a better leader by learning how to handle people. Because of service-learning, I am more prepared for the real-world workplace.

Semester 3 – Volunteering #2

I volunteered at the Ohio State swimming meet for 3 1/2 hours. The Ohio State swimming and diving team is an official sport of the university and of the NCAA. I learned about the opportunity to volunteer through an email. During my time serving, I timed, recorded, and rang a warning bell for the swimmers. I learned that I shake a bell in a funny way but on a more serious note I learned that I am able to handle a fast-paced and new scenario well. This helped me as a leader because it made me more comfortable being uncomfortable. Because of service-learning, I am ready for new opportunities.

Semester 3 – Volunteering #1

I volunteered for the DSWS day of service. I learned of this opportunity through the DSWS weekly emails. During this 5 hours of volunteering, I planted trees and staked them into the ground along with spreading mulch. Afterward, I helped clean garbage off of high street. Through this volunteering, I learned that I am a talented tree planter. I am an improved leader from this experience because a large number of diverse people had to come together at once; therefore, I learned how to lead people of all different ages. Because of service-learning, I am an improved and more diversified person.

Semester 2 – Volunteering #3

I volunteered at Feed My Starving Children for an hour and a half. Feed My Starving Children is an organization that focuses on providing food to starving people around the globe. I have been going to Feed My Starving Children since I could volunteer. During my time volunteering, I helped scoop, package, and seal food. I learned that assembly lines can be very productive. This has made me a better leader by demonstrating to me that a systematic approach to a task that needs to be done many times is very productive.

Semester 2 – Volunteer #2

I volunteered at the Buckeyes Give: Columbus Day of Service for 5 hours. The Columbus Day of Service was done through the OSU Alumni Association. The day involved helping to solve a variety of social issues. I learned about it through the DSWS weekly email. During my time volunteering, I helped sort light fixtures and ceiling fans, and to move and stock rolls of vinyl flooring. I learned the importance of a team working in sync so as to not have people wasting time. I am a better leader from this because I learned how to maximize production by delegating the right people to the right places.

Semester 2 Volunteer #1 – Dunn Dash

I volunteered at the Dunn Dash for 4 hours. The Dunn Dash is an event that promotes a healthy active lifestyle. I learned about it through the DSWS weekly email. During my time volunteering, I encouraged participants to do their best, recorded their distance biked, and clean the bikes once they were done using them. I learned that when people are pushed in the right direction, they can dig deep and accomplish surprising things. This has made me a better leader by exposing the fact that people need motivation but the right kind.

Volunteering #3 – DSWS Day of Service

I volunteered at the Furniture Bank for five hours. The Furniture Bank is a charitable group that provides less fortunate families with furniture for there homes. I learned about it through the DSWS weekly email. During my time volunteering, I helped stack mattresses, relocate chairs, and remove debris. I learned that I work well in groups when the group as a whole has one common goal. This has made me a leader that focuses on creating a common purpose before an activities begin. Because of service learning I am a better leader.

Volunteering #2 – Hot Chocolate Race Registration

I volunteered at the The Greater Columbus Convention Center for four hours. During these four hours, I helped marathon participants register and get the items needed to run the next day. The Hot Chocolate group is a charitable race organization that donates to the Make-a-Wish foundation. I heard about it through the DSWS weekly email. I learned the importance of interacting with others in a productive and respectful way. This has made me a more vocal leader. Because of service learning I am a better leader.

Volunteering #1 – Trash Day Clean Up

I volunteered with the Honors Community Council for three hours. I learned about the Honors Community Center through the osuhonorsscholars Instagram page. The Honors Community Center is a group of honors students looking to serve the community. I picked up trash at Iuka Park separating the trash and the recyclables throughout.  I learned that I have a drive that keeps me going even when I get tired and want to rest. Volunteering has impacted me as a leader by teaching me how to better organize people and spread them out to complete several tasks at once. Because of service learning I am a more complete leader.

True Colors Reflection

Today, through the True Colors Indicator Test, I discovered that I am clearly a “green”. A “green” is a person that relies heavily on logical thinking and the gaining of knowledge to go through life. In addition, being curious and seeking to complete complex problems, are key characteristics of a “green”. This is a very accurate way to describe my thought process going through life. I thrive through the use of logic and looking into the future. Recognizing this information to be true, I plan to utilize it in a productive way to propel the Dunn Sports and Wellnesss forward in society by demonstrating how a Dunn Sports and Wellness Scholar should perform in the classroom and how they can impact society. Also well still in Dunn Sports and Wellness Scholars, I plan to help lift people up in the most efficient way I can. If they need help with studying, then I will help them. Plus, while performing group work I will take the position in the group that makes the most sense to take. I will not be selfish or seek out my own goals but the goals of the group. On the other hand, my weakest color was “blue” and by a landslide. A “blue” is someone that is sympathetic and tender. Realizing that I lack these skills, I will remember to think in the shoes of another person while performing a team task. I, now, see that not everyone views actions and things that happen in a logical way but also in an emotional way;therefore, I plan to grow in sympathetic ability so the group can be more cohesive.
