Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. One thing I am extremely passionate about is healthcare. As a Resident Advisor, I am hoping to host an event that will help student’s understand our current healthcare system, healthcare (or the lack thereof) in other countries, and have a healthy discussion about the views on how healthcare is perceived in the United States and how different types of health have different stigmas in our culture. As a RA, I am also in  a significant leadership role within my residence hall. I have been working on leading by example, especially when it comes to using inclusive language around my residents and other peers. I have also stepped beyond my expectations and am in the process of organizing a partnership between Out of Darkness-Columbus, a human trafficking awareness organization, and an upcoming student organization that one of my residents is creating.

I am also currently taking a pharmacy class, which is inspiring me to continue to get a minor in pharmaceutical sciences, which will greatly help me understand pharmaceuticals in my career as a nurse. Becoming a nurse is something I have always wanted to do, and it’s wonderful to expand my knowledge about my future profession beyond my required classes.

Career

[“Career” is where you can collect information about your experiences and skills that will apply to your future career.  Like your resume, this is information that will evolve over time and should be continually updated.   For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. This is a picture of me during the spring of my junior year in high school. For one of my classes, we had to complete a job shadow. One of my softball coaches, who was a trauma nurse at Nationwide Children’s Hospital at the time, offered to let me job shadow her. This was especially exciting for me for several reasons. At the time, I was a volunteer at Nationwide, but I was not allowed to work in the ER because I was a minor. I wanted (and still want) to become a nurse, so job shadowing someone with my dream job at such a great hospital was a great opportunity. While we were there, I checked up on patients, examined babies with respiratory issues, watched a young woman get over sixty sutures, took patients to get an X-ray, watched hospital workers and police deal with a troubled patient, and examined several MRI and CT scan results. I also talked with several other nurses, doctors, and medics. Later, my coach allowed me to give her an IV. Both of us were surprised because many experienced professionals still have trouble inserting IVs, so it’s not often that someone does it correctly on their first try. I was slightly intimidated because I didn’t want to mess up (or ruin her pitching hand), but I actually had no difficulty doing it. The experience as a whole made me even more determined and excited to become a nurse and has now made me want to become a trauma nurse.

About Me

My name is Chaya Duncan. I was born on November 6, 1997 in Reston, VA. When I was around two or three, my mother moved to Ohio to attend The Ohio State University and we have lived in central Ohio ever since. I graduated from Canal Winchester High School in 2016. While in high school, I did several volunteering projects. I was part of the National Honor Society, Indians club (which was our school volunteering club) and I did volunteering on my own. My most involved projects were with Nellie’s Catwalk for Kids, which is a local charity for pediatric cancer patients, and a volunteering position I held at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. In the classroom, I love doing hands on work and working on projects, but I also enjoy a good lecture and usually remember information that I both hear and write down. Outside of the classroom I love playing softball, playing with my dogs, watching movies, and spending time with my friends. I am beyond excited to attend The Ohio State University and I am so proud to be a buckeye!
