Service Engagement, Global Awareness, and Original Inquiry are the three aspects of the G.O.A.L. S. of the Ohio State Honors and Scholars Center that I would be most interested in exploring if I was accepted into the program. While participating in each of the three opportunities, I would do my best to relate them to my career path of interest- pediatrics- as often as I can.
My mother always taught me that serving our community is very important. Naturally, Service Engagement would be an area of interest for me if I were a member of the Ohio State Scholars or University Honors program. To gain experience that could potentially help me become a well-rounded pediatrician, I would make an effort to further volunteer with people struggling to survive and support themselves in the Columbus area. Seeing people that hardly have anything makes me appreciate all the things I take for granted. I realize that as I dread waking up and going to school to take a Calculus test, the people I am serving would do anything to be able to drive a car to school on a daily basis, open a textbook, and maybe even take a Calculus test. In addition, I would volunteer in children’s hospitals to learn more about how to interact with sick kids and their parents. Knowing how to speak with concerned parents in a soothing manner, as well as having the ability to put a diagnosis in terms a child could understand would undoubtedly contribute to my success as a pediatrician.
Studying abroad is an experience that I feel would benefit any future healthcare provider. Global Awareness is an attribute to the Honors and Scholars programs that I find very interesting because I love to travel. Going into another country would benefit me in my future career of choice because it would help me gain an appreciation for cultures other than the few I am familiar with in America. Furthermore, if I studied abroad, I would make it a point to relate this to my career by spending some time studying a medical practitioner native to the area. By doing so, I would expand my horizons by observing different ways cures are achieved outside the practices of Americans. This can allow me to give future patients better advice to remedy an illness, or to even incorporate different practices into my work.
I would fulfill the goal of Original Inquiry by researching different gene mutations of various cultures around the globe. This is a personal as well as career interest to me. I am fascinated by the endless diseases of peoples and knowing their causes may help me in my future medical career. I would seek plenty of help from Ohio State’s professors and researchers along the way.
In the final analysis, if accepted into the Ohio State Honors and Scholars Center, I would use various opportunities to gain extra experience and knowledge that would better prepare me for my career as a pediatrician.
