Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. G – Global Awareness

The first thing that comes to my mind when I hear the words “global awareness” is study abroad. Although it may seem like a simple answer, the benefits of education abroad can be so much more than just receiving a grade. The world is incredible and complex; each country different than the next. Traveling abroad gives students an incredible opportunity to leave our own little bubble of Columbus, Ohio and experience completely new habits, mannerisms, etiquettes and so much more. Seeing the way others live their lives and how other countries are different can increase our awareness of the world around us, and most importantly a deeper respect for other cultures. Additionally, a student can achieve global awareness without ever leaving campus. Ohio State is an incredible mix of all kinds of different people from all walks of life, and there are so many opportunities to meet others – through clubs, classes, sports, and more.

O – Original Inquiry

I would love to participate in research one day. A student recently came to talk to my survey class about research. Something I love about Ohio State is that it is never too early to participate in research. It seems like there is a research project for every area of interest! Although I am not sure about what I want to research yet, I would like to start my research process by participating in undergraduate research with ongoing research projects. These courses offer great research experience as well as the opportunity to explore different topics and research methods that could help my continue with my research process. Additionally, I want to talk to my professors about their areas of research, because I could learn a lot from them and possible get involved with their projects.

A – Academic Enrichment

One thing I can do to further my academic enrichment is to not be afraid to challenge myself. Although taking higher-level or honors courses can be challenging, they can also be very fulfilling. Taking honors courses can show me that I am capable of much more than I think, and can give me the opportunity to meet great people and great professors. However, classes aren’t the only way to achieve academic enrichment. I can also take advantage of many out-of-the-classroom opportunities, such as seminars and speakers who come visit the school, and discussion sessions hosted by all different departments and faculty members.

L – Leadership Development

If I ever had the opportunity, I would love to join or even create a club that aligns with my interests, either academic or personal, and use my passions to get involved and lead. Another way to not only lead, but develop as a leader, is to learn from others. I joined the novice rowing team at Ohio State this year. I was very intimidated as I had never rowed, or even considered rowing before. However, seeing the leadership abilities of my coaches, and the ways they not only inspire us, but motivate us and push us to get better has taught me a lot about what it means to be a leader. Additionally, I have seen how everyone responds differently to different leadership skills.

S – Service Engagement

There are so many ways to get involved and serve on campus. I would really like to join school-wide service events such as Buckeyethon. Something else I have considered is joining a Buck-i-serve spring break program. This would be an incredible opportunity to serve, learn, and meet all different types of new people. Another thing I could do is serve people on campus, in my everyday life – holding the door for someone, paying for someone’s coffee, going out of my way to brighten peoples’ days. These all may seem like small things but can make a big impact.

Career

[“Career” is where you can collect information about your experiences and skills that will apply to your future career.  Like your resume, this is information that will evolve over time and should be continually updated.   For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. Artifacts

My first “artifact” from this school year would definitely be joining the Ohio State Women’s Novice Rowing Team. It has been a great experience so far.  I had never even thought of rowing to be a possibility until I came to Ohio State. I have learned so many things from rowing already. Being a student athlete pushes you physically, mentally, and academically. However, throughout these challenges, I have learned that I am so much more capable of pushing past these barriers and that I can handle much more than I thought I could. I have learned time management skills, mental toughness, and how to keep pushing when I didn’t think I could go farther. I have also met so many great girls who I am so happy to be able to call my teammates.

About Me

Hi! My name is Katie Downing. I am a freshman at Ohio State this school year. I have lived just outside of Columbus my whole life and I love this city. Right now, I am in the honors program and I plan to graduate with a dual major in Psychology and Criminal Justice. One day, I hope to work with law enforcement as a behavioral analyst or criminal profiler. My interests include reading, playing volleyball, and spending time with family and friends. I am on the Ohio State Novice Women’s Rowing team and I have loved my time as a Buckeye so far. I am involved with H2O Church, a local church which meets right on campus. There are so many ways to get involved on campus. I have heard so many great things about Ohio State and I am very excited to learn, meet new people, expand my knowledge, and discover new passions.
