Informal Interview: Academic Enrichment

I had a great experience shadowing Dr. Cindy Dorsey at the OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital earlier this year.  I was able to ask her a few questions to gain a better understanding of what her daily work routine entails.  Dr. Dorsey’s favorite part of the day involves patient interaction.  She not only visits patients in the hospital but also provides primary care routine check ups.  She also had great relations with her physician assistants and nursing staff who all work together as a team to provide patients with the best care possible.  Dr. Dorsey’s least favorite part about her job is all of the paper work and documentation involved because it takes away time from patient interaction.  She showed me how she uses a dictation device that types her spoken word which speeds up the process some.  I was also able to learn more about the board exams physicians must take to stay current in their field because Dr. Dorsey was studying for one at the time.  Overall, by asking Dr. Dorsey a few short questions I learned that medicine is a field for passionate individuals that wish to help others despite the studying and paperwork that can sometimes be tedious.

Second Year Service Project – The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center

Throughout my second year at OSU I volunteered weekly at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.  I had a great experience volunteering in the hospital my first semester at OSU and wanted to continue.  This has been a great opportunity to learn what it is like to work in different areas of the hospital.  For the first half of my service project I volunteered at the new OSU Brain and Spine Hospital.  I helped restock patient rooms, change sharps containers, and keep patients company.  I was there during the transition from the old building to the new and I learned a lot about what features of the new hospital were improvements from the old and why.  I specifically volunteered on the Stroke Care floor.  I learned how important it is to wash hands before and after entering a patient’s room.  Throughout this experience I was able to connect some of my microbiology and public health coursework to what I saw in the hospital.

For the second half of my service project I volunteered on the Mother and Infants Postpartum floor.  I sat at the nurses’ station to answer the door, prepared new mother folders, clean cribs, and make baby charts.  Throughout the past semester I was really able to get to know the nurses on the floor.  I felt like I was able to build relationships with the nurses and further offer assistance.  I learned the most on this floor because I got to assist with new tasks each week.  This was a valuable experience for me because I someday hope to practice as an OBGYN and I was able to learn a lot about the daily life of an OBGYN in a hospital setting.  Overall, I gained valuable experience in a couple areas of the hospital and I am excited to volunteer in more areas in the future.

While training for a half marathon with one of my best friends, we ran by the Ohio State Adventure Recreation Center.  Neither of us had ever been there so we took a quick look inside.  I had never been rock climbing here before and decided to take a break from our run to try it.  I climbed all the way to the top! I hope to take advantage of the resources and adventure trips offered through this facility throughout my time at Ohio State.

Go.

Last weekend my mom came to visit and take me birthday shopping.  We had heard great things about Polaris from friends and family but had never been before because the mall is not close to my home in Cincinnati.  Polaris is just a short drive away from Ohio State’s campus and had several stores I had never been to before.  There were also plenty of places to eat near by.  I look forward to going back to Polaris sometime soon for the afternoon.

Elizabeth Dorsey

Elizabeth Dorsey

My name is Elizabeth Dorsey.  I grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio.  I am planning to major in Public Health and Microbiology on a pre-medicine track.  I am volunteering at the Wexner Medical Center this semester.  I would also love to become involved in research and learn more about MD/PhD programs.  A long term goal of mine is to work in global public health at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention or the World Health Organization.

Year in Review

This past summer, as an incoming first year student at The Ohio State University, I was excited to explore all that a large university has to offer.  I expected to feel overwhelmed with opportunities of how to become involved around campus.  While at first this was true, I was able to quickly find a few organizations I was passionate about and wanted to invest time in.  I expected the Health Sciences Scholars program to be a great way to meet students that are taking similar science classes and are interested in a health care related career field.  The program did allow me to get to know several like minded students.  As a group of students with similar goals, we were able to motivate each other to do well.  One of my favorite parts of the Health Sciences Scholars program is the number and variety of events that take place.  In particular I found the stress management, talk about the transition to organic chemistry, and the bring your own bowel events were very memorable and applicable to college life outside of the Health Sciences Scholars program.  I found that I learned something new at each event and it allowed the students to keep in touch on a regular basis.  My goal for my second year in the Health Sciences Scholars program is to attend even more events.  As second year students, not everyone will be living near each other in the dorm and we will not have a weekly seminar class.  Therefore, attending events will be the main way I can connect with my Health Sciences Scholars peers.

The most memorable service experience I had throughout my first year at The Ohio State University was volunteering at the Wexner Medical Center.  Once per week I would attend a two to three-hour volunteer shift.  Throughout the first semester I volunteered in Rhodes Hall admittance.  I wheeled patients to their surgery rooms after the patients checked in at the front desk.  This experience was very impactful because it allowed me to become more familiar with the different parts of the hospital and the different types of doctors and nurses in each part. I was able to meet a wide variety of patients and hospital staff.  After my first semester at OSU I became more interested in the career of an OBGYN.  Throughout my second semester I volunteered on the Mother and Infants Postpartum floor of the Wexner Medical Center.  While on this floor I was able to meet OBGYNs and pediatricians.  My role as a volunteer was to help the staff with unit tasks as needed.  These unit tasks often included making information folders for the new moms, putting together snack bags for visitors, restocking room supplies, making patient charts, operating the fax machine, and letting visitors enter or exit the floor.  As a result of this experience I gained insight on what it is like to work in a hospital.  I spent the majority of my time as a volunteer at the nurses’ station and therefore I got to watch the hospital staff communicate as they come and go between patients.  I look forward to continuing to volunteer at the Wexner Medical Center throughout my next three years at The Ohio State University.

Career

The Health Sciences Scholars program has helped me confirm that my dream career is in healthcare.  Throughout my first semester I have learned more about my majors, Environmental Public Health and Microbiology, and I am excited to become involved in these areas of study.  I have learned that Ohio State has on campus resources for anything I could come across in my next four years here.  I know that I can reach out to staff member for assistance in areas including health and wellness, academics, research and social organizations.  I have also really enjoyed learning from upperclassman regarding involvement in research, study abroad, clubs, and academics.  This program also gave me the push to attend faculty office hours.  I will continue to visit my professors during their office hours because I learned that faculty give great advice on strategies to succeed in their class.  Through the classes I have taken thus far I gained a better understanding of the fields I wish to study before I enter a career in healthcare.

While I am on campus chasing my dream career, I will have to focus on staying healthy and finding the right balance between academic and extracurricular commitments.  I plan to stay happy and healthy by relieving stress through continuing to play cello, run, and spend time with friends.  I am particularly excited to participate in group classes in the RPAC and meeting more students through various social clubs on campus.  Over my next four years at Ohio State and beyond, I would like to grow as a person by trying more new things.  Whether it is a new study spot, place to eat, or adventure to go on, I feel I would benefit from the new experiences and meet new people doing so.
