G.O.A.L.S.

The G.O.A.L.S. are individual areas of development that help me to keep improving as a Biological Sciences Scholars.

  • The G stands for Global Awareness, which is an area of development that enhances the idea of diversity among everyone. This area is constantly changing through the meeting of new people and expansion of what it means to be unique. Global awareness is important in the medical field, as the ability to appreciate everyone’s differences makes us a better caretaker and individual. I have been engaged in global awareness through the biological sciences scholars, through many socialization events and being in the Vietnamese Student Association. I learn more about other cultures and a greater appreciation as well.
  • The O stands for Original Inquiry, which promotes the exploration of different research opportunities and development of creativity by asking questions. Being curious and motivated is a large part of having original inquiry. I hope to improve in this area by being involved in research or taking classes that allow me to be more creative my ideas.
  • The A stands for Academic Enrichment, which is an area that focuses on having good academics and understanding and excelling at them. This area should not only be limited to academics in the classroom, as bringing information and finding ways to use them outside of the classroom allows us to grow and expand on ideas in class. I want to fulfill this area by being involved in more activities outside of the classroom, such as joining organizations.
  • The L stands for Leadership Development, in where the development of leadership skills is important. Having leadership skills is something not all people have, and so developing it is crucial to have in the future. This area can be developed through signing up for student government, such as the undergraduate student government, that focuses on improving Ohio State University for all students. It can also be developed inside the classroom, such as asking pertinent questions in class that compels the understanding of the professor or students.
  • The S stands for Service Engagement, which is an area whose main focus is through service for the community. This is important because as college students, we have the time and opportunity to be more involved in events both in the school and community through service work. This can be anything to signing up for events to do outside of the school to help a cause. I hope to be more involved in this area by signing up for events that are sent out by scholars and looking for events in the community individually.

Artifacts

This was a trophy I won at the Ohio K-12 Chinese Speech and Essay Contest held by the Confucious Institute at the Cleveland State University. This artifact was important to me as it was the first contest I have won before. I learned that I am actually capable of achieving something and I hope that my future endeavors will also be as successful as this. It motivates me to think that I am capable of doing great things.

This was a shirt I received at a Biological Science Scholars Event called the Steps for Sarcoma. Through this event, I learned more about the disease and the people that it affects. I felt good knowing that I was helping to support the cause for the cure for this disease.

About Me

Hello! My name is Tina Dong and I am intending to major in Medical Laboratory Science on the PreMed track. I am involved in the Biological Sciences Scholars Program and plan to join more organizations. I want to go to Medical School to pursue a master’s degree to become a Pathologist Assistant. Pathology is something that I am still trying to learn more about, and as I learn more about it, the more I am convinced that this is the right path for me.

I am also very interested in recycling and other environmental issues, so I plan to join service opportunities that focus on saving the earth and raising awareness. As an Asian American, I would also like to be involved in more activities with people like me. The Ohio State University is full of a large group of diverse people and I am glad to be a part of that diversity as well.

Year in Review

First Semester in Review
The first semester of my freshman year has been a big change from when I was in high school. Now that I am in college, I get to decide my own schedule and many other things independently. I definitely think that my experience here has changed me to become a more mature and organized version of myself. Teaching myself class concepts outside of the classroom and learning to create a schedule were some of the important things I learned to do. Transitioning from high school to college was surprisingly not as hard as I thought it would be. I thought that college classes would be drastically different from high school classes, and though it is different, I feel like my high school prepared me enough so I didn’t feel lost once in college.
