Labor

Labor issues have been prominent throughout the world. Particularly, there are complaints on how poorly big corporations may be treating their workers when they source their labor to other, poorer countries. Companies like Dole will come to these poor places offering workers a slightly higher, but still unfair wage, to work for them instead. The workers in these poorer countries usually reside on the farms/plantation in terrible living conditions. While living here, their employers basically get to control the laborers’ entire lives. One can see how easily this power can be abused and the workers can be mistreated. Those who fight for fair wages and working conditions are often ignored or treated poorly in these poorer parts of the world. Apparently, “In the Philippines, workers on supply plantations for Dole-Stanfilco reported being harassed, intimidated, and held at gunpoint by the military because of their union activities.”12 There’s still a lot of debate on whether these large corporations are actually treating their workers fairly, and unfair labor disputes are still prominent in the world today, especially in developing countries.
