The world can only function if its people work together toward a common goal. Clearly this isn’t exactly realistic, as there is lots of conflict in the world today. This common goal, though, is survival. We live in a dynamic, or ever-changing, society, and society has to accommodate the needs of its members. Perhaps one of the most basic necessity of a society is nourishment. Society cannot function without having a reliable way of getting food to its members. While some people choose to be self sustaining and provide for themselves agriculturally, most of the world’s population depends on those working in agriculture and food production. This may be through small local farmers/hunters or through big, well known food corporations. The main focus here is on these mass producing food corporations. Specifically, this article will concentrate on the workings of the commodity chain of Dole Food Company. The foundations of Dole Food Company were laid in 1851 by Samuel Castle and Amos Cooke in Hawaii. Around 1899, James Dole moves to Hawaii and begins growing pineapple too. These three will set the precedent that continued growing and growing until their operation became known as Dole Food Company.
