Career
When it comes to picking a future career, I have a hard time deciding exactly what I’m going to do. The good thing is that my major (Pharmaceutical Sciences) allows me to follow a path that leads into a bunch of careers. All of which I am interested in. I have taken an interest in clinical pharmacy in the past few months! As of right now this is the past that I think would work best for me. So far, every semester of college I have taken a chemistry course. While these classes are very difficult, they have allowed me to take interest in how many things and concepts in our world work. My major also requires that I take classes about drug discovery, development, and even common drugstore products. This has helped me to understand the basic workings of medicine. I am currently applying for pharmacy tech positions! This will allow me to get pharmacy experience as an undergrad and will test if I actually want to continue on with pharmacy. Through the school of Pharmacy here at OSU I was able to attend a career fair/professional Q&A. This event allowed me to get into contact with individuals with jobs relating to my major. One of the professionals I spoke with explained how she obtained her healthcare relating job with only a 4 year degree. This was very interesting to me because I am not 100% sure about how I feel about going to school for an extra 4 years plus a residency. She was able to answer many of my questions and explained how I need to get there!
Artifact 2
For this artifact, I wanted to talk about my recent experience and progress on the OSU Club Tennis team! I completed my first tournament as a member of the club tennis team and I had such a wonderful time! I have not played in a tennis tournament since high school so this was very new me again. We travelled to Michigan in order to compete against a few big name schools. While we did not win many matches, I learned many valuable lessons through it all! I had the wonderful chance to meet and get close with many new people. We learned how to play well together and how to be very patient. We all bonded over the extremely cold Michigan weather and our new favorite ice cream spot! I am looking forward to more tournaments on this team!
G.O.A.L.S.
(G)lobal Awareness: I would love to study abroad sometime in my future at OSU. I have always had interest in studying in Italy so I would love to act upon this goal. Here at OSU, there is a class associated with studying abroad for my major (Pharmaceutical Sciences). I would learn about the country I am going to and would be able to experience it through essentially a pharmacy lens.
(O)riginal Inquiry: It is highly looked upon in my current study and for my future studies that I engage in a research opportunity. One of the ways that I want to accomplish this through research clubs at OSU, such as “Buckeyes Against Alzheimers”. I can also achieve this goal through the College of Pharmacy’s office of undergraduate research!
(A)cademic Enrichment: I want to continue to challenge myself through my coursework at OSU. To do this I want to pick up a minor. I have been very interested in real estate recently and think this would be a great option for me! It is very different from the coursework that I normally engage in and will be able to provide me with very useful information.
(L)eadership Development: I am currently on the club tennis team at OSU but would love to be more than just a member of the team. Next year and the years to follow I want to become a leader on the club team. There are a few leadership positions that would allow me to further improve my leadership skills. Some of the positions that I would be interested in would be the social chair or a health and safety leader once I become CPR certified.
(S)ervice Engagement: While potentially studying abroad, I would love to engage in community service. This would be a very unique service opportunity and would also be something that I have never experienced before. Some service opportunities I could engage in while studying abroad would be taking blood pressure readings and taking vision screenings. By doing this I will be able to further develop empathy skills and practice/improve my ability to work with patients.

Artifacts

For my artifact I chose a piece of artwork that I completed for my friends and myself. I created this in November during our delayed football season due to COVID-19. I love to get creative on my days off and take some time to make something amazing. I started doing digital drawing this past year and absolutely fell in love with it. I now complete it using my iPad and Apple Pencil. Every time I start a new drawing I feel a rush of excitement knowing that I can participate in something I love so much. I always learn something new with each new drawing. I may learn how to blend better or even how to design a better background. Completing these drawing allows me to give to others while also giving to myself. My friends have been able to use these drawings as gifts and I have even hung a few of them around my dorm room. In the future, I would love to expand my business. While doing drawing for free still provides myself and others with enjoyment, I know that I could use my skills to provide for myself as well.
About Me
Hello, my name is Janelle Dixon and I am a first-year student at The Ohio State University. I am currently in the exploration program without a major but I am looking to go Pre-Med. I am from Canton, Ohio and went to GlenOak High School. I was involved in varsity tennis, National Honors Society, the IB Diploma Program, Academic Letter, Spanish Honors Society and Spirit Club. Most of my time revolved around service, wether it was for one of the clubs I was apart of or just for something to do on the weekend.
At The Ohio State University I am apart of the Mount Leadership Society Scholars Program. I hope to dive deeper into my love for science while I am here. In order to do this, I plan to join clubs relating to Pre-med or even just health sciences in general. I am interested in joining club tennis and hoping to eventually get a job on campus as well. After Ohio State, I intend to attend medical school and become a doctor. I am ready for whatever is to come!
