This photo is from my first scuba diving experience. I am on the left, my step-mom is in the middle, and my father is on the right. We were diving off the coast of San Andres, Colombia this past June. Scuba Diving was something that I’ve always wanted to do, so I jumped when the opportunity presented itself. I learned about different fish, the ecosystem at that reef in Colombia, and ecological concerns for the area. This image is representative of much more than a scuba diving experience though. I believe that living life involves experiencing and learning about as many different things as possible. This scuba diving experience, along with my sky diving experience, and my plans to study abroad represent a very important part of who I am. This photo represents not only my curiosity about the world, but also my willingness to learn about different cultures and ideas. I believe that this curiosity influences my love of learning in all aspects of education. As I plan my year abroad,  this innate interest in different things and experiences drives my decisions and planning.

I consistently look forward to Thursdays. At 4 every Thursday I get this guy on my back off of a bus from Hamilton STEM Elementary for a student organization known as College Mentors for Kids. His name is Eric, and he’s a fifth grader there. In this particular photo, we are standing by Mirror Lake after taking a tour of Campus, scavenger hunt style. Being a Mentor with College Mentors for Kids is an experience that helps to shape who I am weekly. I’ve volunteered with inner city kids since middle school. In children, I see a lot of traits I strive to have: appreciation for the little things, energy, an interest in how the world works, etc. Despite circumstances that would bring any normal college student down, these kids are some of the happiest people I’ve ever met; they are honestly just happy to be experiencing life. Working with kids teaches me that I never want to fully grow up. Working with kids teaches me perspective. It teaches me that its ok to have a bad day, but that a bad test score isn’t something that should take my happiness away. It also teaches me not to take life for granted! I hope to continue to learn from Eric and the other Hamilton STEM students, and I plan to make the most of every experience I get both here at The Ohio State University and in life.

About Me

23381dip-042

I am trying to answer one specific question: what am I going to do with my life when these four years are over? I have narrowed my major down to economics, but where I see myself going with it in the future is not quite as clear. As I began to think about how to approach solving this situation, I began attempting to learn as much as possible about as many subjects as possible. How and why people, and more specifically, I, think and act the way we do interests me immensely. As a sophomore at Ohio State, I am looking to specifically expand my views on topics such as diversity, both domestic and foreign politics and economics, and culture.  I plan on taking a step in the right direction and studying abroad during my junior year, going first to the University of Economics in Prague and then heading to Gold Coast, Australia for International Relations and Diplomacy. I need to experience other cultures, see different government in action, and learn more about diversity first hand in order to begin really finding the answer to my question.
