Columbus To-Do List: Part 2

From the Columbus To-Do List, I chose to visit the Columbus Museum of Art, Kafe Kerouac, and the Olentangy River Trail. My favorite experience from the list was Kafe Kerouac for its wonderful drinks and laid-back atmosphere. I also enjoyed the Olentangy River Trail, as it was very scenic and was surrounded by nature. I saw herons and deer, and it was nice to be back in nature while living in a city. The Columbus To-Do List taught me that Columbus is full of opportunities and offers a variety of experiences that one cannot find anywhere else. I want to explore other trails and parks in Columbus, especially in spring when it is warmer. The parks and trails are very tranquil and offer an escape from the stress of daily life. I would highly recommend the Columbus Museum of Art to any art aficionado. Though I don’t particularly enjoy the arts, it was a nice opportunity and allowed me to experience something new. The galleries displayed a wide variety of art; therefore, I would recommend it to my friends who are interested in the arts. There are paintings, sculptures, drawings, and plenty of mixed media pieces from all points in history from across the world. It was an interesting experience and let me learn more about other cultures and time periods. Kafe Kerouac was definitely my favorite; since beginning the Columbus To-Do List, I have been there three times. It is a great place to study or catch up with friends, and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a place to do homework, wanting to spend time with friends and family, or anyone needing a nice place to simply relax and enjoy a great cup of coffee. I hope to find similar cafes that I enjoy as much. For anyone hoping to try the cafe, I suggest going with friends at first, then once again alone. Kafe Kerouac is fantastic both with friends and without. For anyone going to the art museum, I would suggest allowing enough time to really enjoy all of the artwork and read about each piece. Going with friends made the experience better, as it was fun to talk about the different types of art. Finally, for the Olentangy River Trail, my greatest suggestion is to dress for the weather. The trail is wonderful year-round, but is much more enjoyable when dressed appropriately. Overall, the Columbus To-Do list was a great way to learn about what Columbus has to offer and enjoy many new experiences.

Columbus To-Do List Part 1: Kafe Kerouac

For the semester, I have chosen to do the “coffee and tea” list off of the Columbus To Do List. I’m looking forward to finding new places to study and do homework, as well as spending time with friends and learning more about them. Coffee shops are great places for studying and talking to people, and this list gives many options to do so. I hope to see new places in the city and find great places to spend time at. So far, I have been to Kafe Kerouac. I went to the cafe with Sterling, and it was nice to drink coffee and get to know him better. My favorite part was choosing a drink. All of the drinks are named after famous writers; I chose the “Charles Dickens”, which is coffee with chocolate and peanut butter. I loved the artsy atmosphere and the coffee was great. I was able to learn more about my friend and connect with him in a new environment.  The staff was really nice and the service was quick. I would definitely recommend it to a friend because of the atmosphere, the staff, and the quality of the food and drinks. I am looking forward to trying out the other cafes, especially the Roosevelt Coffeehouse because some of their profits go towards different charities, including charities that support providing clean water, fighting hunger, and ending human trafficking. I am excited to visit each of these coffee shops to see the difference between them all and find my favorite.

About Me

I am Emily Dingman, a first year student at the Ohio State University studying microbiology. Academically, I am interested in math, chemistry, and biology. Aside from academics, I am very passionate about environmental protection and sustainable, clean energy. In the future I intend to be a microbiologist, working in the development of cleaner, sustainable bio-fuels.

I am from a small town in Ohio called Burton, where I attended Berkshire High School, graduating first in class. I was a member of the varsity track, cross country, and bowling teams. I was class treasurer, president of student council, and participated in Spanish Honors Society and National Honors Society. All of the extracurricular activities I participated in during high school made me the hardworking, ambitious person I am today. In college, I plan to continue working hard and pushing myself academically, taking as many science and math classes as possible. I know that this determination will help me achieve future goals, such as graduating college and becoming a microbiologist.

Growing up with a creek in my backyard inspired my passion for the environment; seeing the wildlife a small stream alone can support made me realize how important every aspect of the environment is. The natural world is being threatened by human activity, and remembering the nature that surrounded me as a child inspires me to dedicate my life to environmental conservation. Climate change is an underestimated threat to wildlife, and I see bio-fuels as an important step towards clean energy; I am excited to have the opportunity to participate in the development of green energy. My greatest goal in life is to help mitigate the effects of climate change and lead the way to a more sustainable future. Graduating college is the next step to completing my goal, and I am excited to see where this path leads.
