Volunteering at a medical clinic

My neighbor who is a doctor, donates his spare time at a clinic that provides free medical attention to a large number of Hispanic immigrants who would not otherwise receive any.  Wanting to both help and improve my Spanish skills, I asked him if I could be of any help.  As the clinic is always in need of extra help, he was very happy to have me.  Since many of the patients speak very little English, I helped them fill out the necessary paper work to get registered with the clinic.  This was often a very challenging task that really tested my knowledge of Spanish and my ability to communicate.  Having volunteered here, I feel that I have not only improved my Spanish, but have also been inspired to possibly seek a career in helping Hispanic immigrants.

Freshman Year at Ohio State

My first year at OSU was a wonderful and very formative year.  Upon arrival at OSU in the fall, I had no idea what area or career I would pursue.  The International Affairs scholars program helped me realize that I want to pursue a career involving international matters.  As I came to OSU, I was having trouble pinpointing a major.  Now, with the help of family, friends, and the International Affairs community, I am confident as I declare a double major in Spanish and international studies specializing in world economy and business.  This has given me a much greater sense of who I am and who I want to be.  I now know that I would like to enter either a career in international business or a career in service work with disadvantaged Hispanics.

After an amazing year of self-discovery, I am looking forward to the future and whatever it may bring.

Artifacts

In the summer of 2016, I studied Italian in Florence, Italy for two weeks at Parola, a language school located in the heart of downtown Florence.  Parola is a full immersion school, meaning that communication was only in Italian.  This was both an incredibly difficult and rewarding experience, as I struggled with the language and made noticeable improvements.
