What is Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering?

From the Department of Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering (FABE)’s website. Their mission is “To advance science, teach principles and applications, and disseminate knowledge of engineering needed to efficiently produce, distribute, and process biological products (such as food, feed, fiber, and fuel) while conserving natural resources, preserving environmental quality, and ensuring the health and safety of people.” (The Ohio State University, 2019).

Why is this Program Important to Me?

After spending my first year officially with the major, I can attest that everyone who works for this department abides, and is driven by this mission statement. This program is important to me because I believe that there has been this divide created where machines and nature and life and non life are two exclusive domains that do not work together, but the existence of this major proves otherwise and I hope that there will be a stronger bridge between biology and engineering.

What have you Learned in the Program. What are your Competencies?

In the program, I was able to learn a wide variety of skills and aspects revolving all around the nature of bioengineering. These include thermodynamics and heat and mass transfer of objects. Biomass yields and the factors that may limit or catalyze their reactions, and the statics and mechanics of materials.

Competencies include Solidworks, MATLAB, and will be learning AutoCAD this fall.

What are your Career Goals. How are your Collegiate Experiences Help Achieve them?

My career goals are to work in a firm that specializes in medical devices, specifically prosthetics or patient monitoring. I am interested in both the R&D and business side of making a product both effective and marketable. My collegiate experiences have prepared me with the knowledge toolbox to understand how to make these products feasible, as well as create an environment that allows healthy networking and creates a contact list helpful in supporting my goals.
