During the cutting and polishing stage jewelry quality gems are sent to one of the main diamond trading and cutting centers. Traditionally, diamonds are sent to diamond centers located in Antwerp, New York, Johannesburg and Tel Aviv. Recently, other centers have opened in Mumbai, China, and Thailand; however, most of the diamonds are still cut and polished in Antwerp, the world’s diamond capital. Once at the centers, diamantaires, or diamond experts cut the stones into shapes. Polishing is soon to follow and the newly polished stones are then classified by the Four C’s (cut, color, clarity, and carat). Once classified, the diamonds are sold to wholesalers or jewelry manufacturers in one of the twenty-four registered diamond exchanges.
