November 22, 2016: Commodity

Tuesday at 4pm in Hagerty Hall 145 we address the questions: What is a commodity? What is the relation between representation and commodity? Why does representation need a material manifestation (use-value)? How is the commodity form important for exchange?

We’ll begin by reading the first few pages of these notes on the commodity as a starting point for discussion of Capital chapters 1-2. Supplemental notes (in the document linked above) on Representation and the Commodity: from Kant to Hegel and Marx may help clarify issues that arose in discussion last week.

suggested readings:

Capital, Chapter 1: The Commodity, Marx

Capital, Chapter 2: The Process of Exchange, Marx.
