Why we chose this topic:

In the United States, diabetes mellitus type 2 affects 9.3% of adults and can lead to an array of consequences including retinopathy, cataracts, neuropathy, hypertension, stroke, heart disease, gastroparesis, steatohepatitis biliary disease, chronic kidney disease, and decreased cognition.  As future advanced practice nurses, we will likely care for individuals impacted by type 2 diabetes mellitus.  Early recognition and treatment are crucial for improving clinical outcomes and as advanced practice nurses we can play a key role in prevention, recognition, and treatment (McCance & Huether, 2019).
