Artifacts

Knowledge is one of the biggest things I live by and value in my life. I think knowledge is one of the few things in life you can never have enough of.

Every summer I go back to visit my extended family for a couple of weeks in Mexico. Two summers ago I had the opportunity to go to a place called an “internado” which is like a boarding school but this internado was for kids in poverty.  I got to spend ten days teaching six, seven and eight year old’s English. I got really close to a six year old named Carlitos. Carlitos would take public busses by himself and sing, hoping passengers would give him leftover change so he could go buy himself food. Every time he wanted to use the bathroom he had to walk 10 minutes to the nearest gas station because his family could not afford to have a bathroom in their house. However, there was not a single dull moment with Carlitos or many of the other kids who came from similar living conditions. Apart from sharing my knowledge with these kids, they taught me that no matter what is going to happen, the only thing you can do is try your best to be happy.

There is always something new to learn and the best knowledge we can gain comes from personal experiences.
