Year in Review
Entering college, I did not have many expectations for my experience here. I assumed I would get a good education and maybe do some not so eye popping things every year to help pad my resume. As the year went on, I learned that not only am I receiving a good education, but the potential to actually make a change in the community is there. I can really help the way I want to, and do the things I wants to do. I might not only do research, but there is a strong likelihood I can get research in something I feel strongly about, and impact the community in any way I care. I learned about all of the clubs there are on campus, and all of the ones I may be able to start. My plan at the beginning of this year was to get adjusted to the rigors of college life and then, if possible, get more involved. Now that I feel I am more adjusted to campus life I plan on spending next year getting involved on campus and changing Columbus for the things I care about.
G.O.A.L.S.
[ “G.O.A.L.S.” is a place where students write about how their planned, current, and future activities may fit into the Honors & Scholars G.O.A.L.S.: Global Awareness, Original Inquiry, Academic Enrichment, Leadership Development, and Service Engagement. For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. Delete these instructions and add your own post.
Global Awareness: Students cultivate and develop their appreciation for diversity and each individual’s unique differences. For example, consider course work, study abroad, involvement in cultural organizations or activities, etc .
Original Inquiry: Honors & Scholars students understand the research process by engaging in experiences ranging from in-class scholarly endeavors to creative inquiry projects to independent experiences with top researchers across campus and in the global community. For example, consider research, creative productions or performances, advanced course work, etc.
Academic Enrichment: I interviewed
Leadership Development: Honors & Scholars students develop leadership skills that can be demonstrated in the classroom, in the community, in their co-curricular activities, and in their future roles in society.
Service Engagement: Throughout this year, I have spent many hours helping clean up the Olentangy River, working with Red Cross, raising money for CHOICES Columbus and raising awareness about Domestic Violence in the area. While I gained a lot from all of these experiences I learned the most from working with CHOICES to raise awareness on and hopefully end domestic violence, especially in the Columbus area. I spent hours each semester raising money for the women’s shelter in Columbus and learning more about what they do. CHOICES works to protect people that have been affected by domestic violence and house mostly children but also many women who need shelter. They give these people a place to stay until a situation can be found for them.
When thinking about what I may do for my service project next I have thought about applying to volunteer at a hospital or a study abroad, but I looked into other opportunities and found that helping out at CHOICES could be a great experience for my growth next year. I’ll be able to meet all types of people and help them recover and find a much better situation for a better life and future for the children and the women that come through there every day.
Final Strategic Plan
Although my understanding of my intended major is not entirely clear because I am still deciding a major, I am beginning to lean towards a human nutrition major and may decide to commit to it sometime next semester when I feel entirely comfortable. I do understand the major and know what I have to do to become a medical student down the road. I know if this fails I am interested in biomedical engineering and may shift to this major, but I hope that does not happen. Using Ohio State’s website is really helpful in almost every way. I can find almost anything I need to learn about various majors and I can always ask my family or peers if I have other questions. My plan to stay healthy will consist of me staying on top of my school work. I learned this semester that if I am on top of my school work, I have time to do other stuff and I will not begin to stress too much. I can make time to exercise and eat well. In late October I began trying this and investing in it and it has worked well so far. I think I will be able to stick to it but my classes will change next semester and I will need a new schedule. I have met many upperclassmen my first semester and they have helped so much in deciding a major and I will keep going to them when I need help with my life as a whole. I would like to stick to the consistency I have found and try and get more involved on campus.
