Scholars Tailgate

As one of my first Scholars events, I attended the tailgate where we enjoyed pancakes and socialized. As a first event, I found it very welcoming and I had a lot of fun playing corn hole and relaxing with friends.

Year in Review

Now that my first semester as an OSU student is almost over, I have come to reflect on my experiences that I have gained. When I first came to campus, I was very nervous. College was always very intimidating but I learned that it is not so daunting. It is not that difficult to make friends and I have made some friends that have made my experience at OSU pretty great. Being social was always a struggle for me in large group settings. Although I am still trying to work on this, I have made an effort to get rid of this social fear. Personally for me, my classes are quite extensive and difficult. I decided to switch to engineering, specifically Chemical Engineering, so my course load is quite rigorous. I have learned new studying strategies and am overall doing better. One of my largest accomplishes from my first semester was getting into a research lab where we study the effects of different antibodies on hearts. I find it really interesting and hope to devote a large amount of time to it next semester and in the future. I feel ready for next semester but I am going to take advantage of Christmas break and relax. It was a very stressful semester, but I feel motivated to continue working hard and apply what I have learned for next semester.

Spring Semester 2018:

Currently, the spring semester of my first year at OSU is winding down. The only thing left are exams.
This semester was a lot more challenging than the first. I took calculus 2, general chemistry 2, sociology, and fundamentals of engineering 2. My most difficult classes were by far calculus 2 and chemistry 2. I plan on ending my first year with a GPA of around 3.45 which I am proud of with my premed and enginering focus. I got myself into research this semester and i have been leariing a ton. I plan on sticking with my research for a while down the road. This semester was much easier to adjust to than the first. Overall, I am pleased with my performance and I will continue working hard till I obtain all of my goals and ambitions!

G.O.A.L.S.

As a scholars student, I plan to pursue my future and career goals within leadership, academics, and helping out whenever I find an opportunity. I am currently a chemical engineering student. As of now, I am pre med and looking to pursue a career in medicine. I chose the path of engineering because I love the aspect of combining chemistry and engineering and pushing myself to do the best that I can. Over the time of college, I look forward to getting involved in some student organizations that will help expand my learning experience while at The Ohio State University. Also, I would like to get involved in a volunteering organization that I can attend regularly. What I am really excited about is starting research. I am really excited and motivated to be the best thatI can be and to give it 100% effort as I pursue my dreams as a Buckeye.

I look to doing everything I can in each of the G.O.A.L.S. sections as a scholars student. I want to make a difference in life on campus. I am not sure how I would go by that or what I want to change but it is something that I am striving for. Something that I have learned to be a lot better at is finding answers to solutions when they take some sort of digging to attain. I like to solve puzzles so it is very easy for me to go out of my way to find something out. Academically, I want to push myself to do the best that I can. I want to identify my strengths and weaknesses as a student then work on them in order to become more well rounded. Over the past couple years, I have pushed myself to become more vocal. I used to be shy and I still am a little. It is important for me to become a role model and leader for anyone that is looking for guidance or a friend. I feel that having the ability to be a leader is a vital skill that can open an infinite amount of doors in the future. I started volunteering when I was a freshman in high school. I originally did it to build my resume but I soon found that I loved the experiences gained from it. I volunteered at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus for a year in 2016 and 2017. I learned a lot about patient care and simple communication skills. I am definitely more open and communicative because of it. I would like to expand my roles in service engagement and really make a difference in peoples’ lives.

Artifacts

This picture reflects my recent decision to commit to pursuing engineering with a pre med tract. I am extremely determined to do well and accomplish all of my goals to the best of my ability. Over the past year, I have went back and forth on whether I should pursue engineering or stay with biochemistry. I am excited to pursue engineering and see the doors it opens for me in the new future.

About Me

Hello, my name is Trevor Dew. I am a current first year at The Ohio State University. I am in the Biological Sciences Scholars program. My current major is Chemical Engineering. My favorite classes are science and mathematics related. I absolutely love going to football games and hanging out with friends. My interests are playing basketball and getting to know people. I chose the scholars program at OSU because I was really interested in getting involved. I found a program that will give me great connections later in life and gives me direct access to many research opportunities. I love being apart of scholars and meeting all sorts of people in it.
