Movie making and story telling

Digital Art Stop Motion Project

When we began this project, I was unsure of what I was supposed to do. But, then I saw the picture of the hedgehog in a kayak, and I knew what I had to do. To make this video, I looked up and downloaded pictures of hedgehogs. I tried to find pictures of hedgehogs doing normal things, like drinking coffee, and playing sports. For the audio, I used the stock imovie music and sound effects. I felt this fit the project better than a pop song. In this video, it is a hedgehog going about his day. He wakes up, goes to work, enjoys some of his hobbies, and then goes on a Tinder date. I tried to convey what he was doing without a bunch of text on the screen, and just show what he was doing. By using stop motion, I can make his personality more fleshed out and convey his identity easier.  I wanted to make his identity that of a normal human, just in a hedgehog body. While there is no overarching plot to the story and the character does not grow, I feel that his character become more developed. He might look like a hedgehog, but he is really a millennial in the big city working his 9-5 while trying to find romance. I think they should turn this into a romantic comedy.

Midterm Assignment

When first assigned this project, I was unsure of what to do. As I played around, I had the idea to make my head a planet. Not only do I like space and galaxies, but I also

thought it would convey how I saw myself. Following tutorials, I created a background that looked like space. I added colored blobs to add depth to the background. With your help,

I added a galaxy photo I took offline into the background. I changed the opacity of the different layers to blend them better. In a separate Photoshop file, I made a three-layer

picture of my head. One is a shadow, one is a spherical picture of a NASA texture, and one is my head. I then moved that photo to the main picture. To make the dust clouds, I

made white streaks across the image, added a liquefy filter, and then I used the smudge filter and a low opacity eraser to make them look more like dust trails. I did the same to add

an atmosphere to my face. From there, I added two lens flairs and burned and dodged to try to add shadows. I used a brush tool to make my face features more distinct. I then

added a filter to make  the image bluer, which to me looks more like space.

To me, this picture represents me more than a collage of my favorite things would. I often feel separate or different, like I’m off in space by myself. I also feel like I’m the sum of

my parts, and not just a bunch of little things together. I think this adds to my personal brand because it looks really cool, which makes me look really cool. I also think space is

awesome, and full of mystery, but is also full of pretty colors. Galaxy is extremely trendy, and I always love being in style. In the end, this picture not only represents me, but

presents a single brand that is easily understood.

Assignment 6: Graphic Design

For my project, I decided to use a photo I had taken of Columbus to create an ad for the city of Columbus. This ad would on the internet to create buzz about moving to Columbus. To make this, I used 3D text, different layer filters, adjustment filters like exposure and posterize, and the brush tool. I used an inverse layer mask to put buildings in front of the letters and the brush tool to add shadows onto the letters. To me, this says that the city of Columbus, is big, up and coming, and is the city to be in. By adding the words, I can express that Columbus is a young person’s city and full of new opportunities. The color red adds an urgency and passion to the message, making the ad even bolder.

Assignment 5: Long Exposure

To take the long exposure photos, Brittany and I used my camera that has a long exposure setting. Since we did not have a tripod, we just set the camera on our TV stand. The blue one is an iPhone with a post-it on top and the other one is Christmas lights. Both the photo shopped photos are a form of double exposure. The first one was me just messing around after I had learned the basics, and the other one was from me following the tutorial on double exposure.  I think the second one looks really great and I am super happy with how it came out. I did learn, however, that it really matters what photos you use to do this. I had tried to recreate that with a selfie I had and it did not look good at all.

Assignment 4: Portraits and Blog Post

To edit these pictures, I used filters to enhance the lighting effects of each one, increasing the contrast on the hard lighting, and increasing the brightness on the soft lighting and the golden hour. To edit the pictures, I used the tools we learned on Thursday and the select tool. I realized as I work that the saying “less is more” applies to using Photoshop a lot. A portrait is supposed to be a photo that shows the personality of the subject in how its framed. It should tell a story. You give life to a portrait with framing, lighting, props, and editing the photo. Specific lighting can enhance a subject’s personality. For example, a person can look kinder in soft lighting, and meaner in hard lighting.

Assignment 3: Composition and Blog Post

For my project, I tried to capture the identity of the Fisher College of Business. I chose this not only because I love the buildings, but because I think that the identity of Fisher is so unique. When you’re there, it doesn’t feel like you are on the big sprawling, of OSU anymore. I chose the photos I did to emulate the pride I feel for being a student at Fisher, and the feeling of prestige FCOB gives off. I turned the contrast on the photos way up to brighten the colors and I skewed the photos to make the buildings seem bigger and closer to the viewer.

Assignment 2:Photo Basics

I took these photos (except for the stadium photo) throughout the week as I went about my life on campus. For me, the most memorable parts of college are the moments you create yourself. I think adding the color filters shift the mood in the photos. The cooler photo feels calmer to me, while the warmer photo seems more nostalgic and pleasant than the original. I do think changing the exposure just kind of ruins the picture, though, both darker and lighter. It makes it hard to make out, and doesn’t change the mood like changing the temperature did. For me, the identity of OSU is one of independence, but also intense connection to one another. The picture from inside Sullivant Hall represents the diversity of the student body with its unusual colors. The picture of the stadium represents how we all come together to make one, distinct picture. Everyone is so different from each other, but we all are Buckeyes, and have lots of pride about that. The OSU community has made me feel more secure about my identity and being who I am. I have found a lot more people that have similar interests and values to me than I ever did in my small hometown.

Here are some more photos I did with filters, just for fun as I experimented in lab!

Assignment 1:Website Critique

WEBSITE LINK

The website I decided to critique was my old dance team’s, Sophistication Dance Company (SDC). Now, most information for the team is posted through facebook, and the site is really only used to pay bills, but I think the website looks like it was made in 2002. I dislike the site for many reasons. One reason is the color scheme. It a terrible green color and the text is all bright pink. These colors might look good on a dance floor, but they look terrible on a webpage. I also hate the photos that they use. For example, the first picture you see is this:

And yes, it is that big.

I dislike this because I think this is a terrible representation of my dance team, it makes us look old, and not well put together. If someone is looking for a place to take their daughter to dance, and this is someone’s first impression of SDC, they might pick somewhere else. I mean, they have a photographer who takes amazing photos all the time, and never uses them! I googled for about 30 seconds and found this:

This would be a much better representation of SDC.
