Global Awareness

In my past, I’ve gone on two mission trips to the Dominican Republic where we helped both physically and spiritually in communities that have been built up for over ten years. Working there helped me to gain an appreciation for how those in poverty live and for their culture. With that I’m mind, I am interested in traveling abroad on a economics-centered trip to learn about the global economy and how to best help those who live in poverty.

Original Inquiry

In order to further my own knowledge, I am interested in engaging in research with a professor in the area of economics. This is still pretty open-ended, but I plan on meeting with the advisor for the Economics Department to get a better idea of how research would work specifically and figure out possible professors that I could talk to.

Academic Enrichment

In the coming semesters, I am truly going to challenge myself to take as many honors classes as I can. I belief that taking just the required courses are not sufficient, and in my coming years I should try to take the most challenging courses so that I can become more marketable and attractive to potential employers and those who would offer internships. I also plan on learning how to use the software R so that I have some more computer experience, since currently I’m not very well-educated in that area. I am also interested in joining Omicron Delta Epsilon, the economics honors society on campus in the coming years once I am eligible.

Leadership Development

To better develop my leadership skills, I plan on staying active in the clubs that I have joined so that I can become a stronger member and eventually a leader in them. I may also be interested in becoming a resident assistant in my dorm and possibly a teacher’s assistant in the later years of college.

Service

I believe that service in one of the most important things that one can do for his/her community. I would like to join some religious organization, possibly BuckeyeCatholic or CRU. I would partake in events that they have for the community in order to build and better bond with those around me and in order to help the students on campus feel more welcome and comfortable. I would also like to help with service in the city of Columbus in order to help those in suboptimal living conditions. I am also possibly interested in the mission trips that Ohio State has to offer.

About Me

Hi, I’m Matt Devis, an honors student at the Ohio State University. I’m from Cleveland and I’m currently majoring in Math and Economics. I went to Padua Franciscan High School, where I was active in student government and several different bands. I have a job on-campus as an Office Assistant at my dorm. I’m very interested in politics and philosophy. In my spare time, I enjoy hanging out with friends and reading.
