For the Columbus to Do List Part, 2, one of the restaurants I went to was Simply Rolled, in the Short North. I had been wanting to try rolled ice cream for a while so I was glad that I finally got a chance to do so. It was really cool to watch them make the ice cream (they do it right in front of you). Basically, they pour liquid ice cream onto a cold plate, mix it around with additional toppings, and then roll it up. I got the flavor that was strawberry with gram crackers mixed in. Once the whole thing is done, it is very photogenic, which I think is probably the whole point of rolled ice cream because other than the way it looks, it’s not that different from regular ice cream. The ice cream was pretty good, although I’ve had better. At a cost of seven dollars, I would honestly rather go to Jeni’s.
Another restaurant I went to was Schmidt’s Sausage Haus in the German Village. Established in 1886, Schmidt’s is one of Columbus’ longest standing restaurants, and a cornerstone of the iconic German Village neighborhood. In addition to having their bratwurst, potato salad, and house-made apple sauce, I had one of their signature cream puffs. It was good, although I have to say I was a little disappointed. The cream puff looks way more tasty than it actually is. However, the potato salad and apple sauce were AMAZING. I’ve never had better potato salad or apple sauce anywhere else in my life. Overall, I would recommend Schmidt’s.
