About Me

Sarah Dever is in her first year at OSU and is studying Electrical and Computer Engineering. Having parents that are both engineers introduced Sarah to engineering concepts from a young age, but it wasn’t until she took an Introduction to Pre-Engineering class as a high school freshman that she truly realized that engineering was for her. Also in her freshman year of high school, Sarah was involved in stage crew, which gave her hands-on experience with power tools and technical problem solving. During her sophomore, junior, and senior years of high school, Sarah was a member of two robotics teams: a VEX robotics team at her all-girls high school, and a FIRST robotics team at a local all-boys high school. During her senior year, Sarah held leadership positions on both robotics teams.

During her time at OSU, Sarah plans to get involved with clubs and programs that involve engineering, computer science, and the environment. Outside of engineering, Sarah is interested in art, creative writing, history, and hiking. Her family has hiked at many different national parks, most recently Yellowstone National Park and Rocky Mountain National Park, but she often prefers going on hikes in the Cleveland Metroparks, which are conveniently located right by her hometown of Westlake, Ohio.

Columbus Adventure

My group made the decision to meet up at Mission Coffee Company in the Short North for this project. It was a very calming and productive-feeling location, and the decorations and design set-up gave it a cosy and casual ambiance. It felt like a welcoming place, especially on the rainy day when we went. The group of us spent a bit of time catching up and drying off before taking our picture together outside. We then went inside to order bakery items and coffee, and enjoyed them together. During this trip, we found out about each other’s coffee shop  preferences, as well as about the vast number of cafes and coffee shops in the Short North. I plan on going back at some point, as it feels like a good place to get work done.

Columbus To-Do List #2

A few weeks ago, it was the birthday of two close friends of mine from high school. To celebrate, a group of friends of mine from my high school who all go to OSU went together to ZenCha Tea Salon in the Short North. The place had an entire menu for different types of tea, which, as someone who really appreciates tea, I found to be very exciting. The tea and the food were both very good, and we even had cheesecake to celebrate the birthdays. It was a really great experience, and I especially enjoyed being able to catch up with old high school friends, many of whom I had only seen once since the semester started.

On the Thursday night of the three day weekend for Veterans’ Day, a group of HES students were looking for something to do to celebrate the end of the week and the long weekend. A group of four of us were talking in one of our dorm rooms, and began looking for a place to go out to eat in the Short North. By the time we decided on a place, Nida’s Thai on High, our group had expanded from 4 people to 7 as more people began to wander through the hallways and hang out in our room. The food was very good, and it was a nice reminder of how many people I’ve become friends with on my floor and in my HES group.

My favorite experience from this project was going to Nida’s Thai on High. I have learned, through this project, that Columbus has a lot to offer in the way of enjoyable food. Because my focus in this project was food, I want to explore other parts of the city. I plan to explore the shopping, art galleries, and entertainment available around Columbus at some point, because I feel there is still a lot I have yet to experience in this city. I would recommend to others completing this project to look for food that interests you, and find a group of friends who will go with you, because the best part of the experience is spending time with friends and creating a memory together.

Artifacts 1 & 2

Robotics – During my sophomore year of high school, I joined my high school’s robotics team, and my life was forever changed. Before being a part of the team, I was unsure of what I wanted to do with my life, and did not think that I wanted to go into engineering. As a member of the VEX robotics team for three years of my high school career, I became more proficient in my technical and social skills, I became more sure of my interest in engineering, and I became more confident in myself. Through time on this robotics team I made close friends, I became a member of another robotics team, and I found a place where I was comfortably able to take leadership positions.

Drawing – I have been drawing for a long as I can remember–from crayon drawings and grade school comics to digital art and high school art classes, drawing has always been important to me. I often find drawing to be a good way to sort out emotions and ideas, allowing me to organize my thoughts and center myself. This semester, I am taking ART 2100, beginner’s drawing class, and this class has been a great experience for me. Three days a week, I have two hours built into my day to draw, which is helpful for me during this stressful first semester of college. I’ve learned new drawing techniques, worked with other people who are also interested in art, and created pieces of art that I am proud to have drawn.

About Me: Strengths

Strategic (Strategic Thinking)

As this strength suggests, I soak in my surroundings, paying attention to patterns and results so that I can apply this knowledge towards problem-solving. I pay attention to the past in order to decide the best course of action for the future.

Learner (Strategic Thinking)

I value in information, and seek out explanations when I don’t understand something. I don’t rush through things just to be finished; I like to experience new things for the sake of learning and becoming a more well-rounded person.

Futuristic (Strategic Thinking)

I am someone who thinks about the long-term affects of all actions and solutions, and tries to make sure that outcomes will be the best they can be. I am a goal-setter, and am motivated by my plans for the future.

Intellection (Strategic Thinking)

I like to spend time sorting out my own thoughts and improving my skills, especially when it comes to language. I enjoy writing and reading in my free time, which has helped me improve my vocabulary and communication skills.

Individualization (Relationship Building)

I enjoy meeting new people and getting to know them; I find it interesting to figure out the motivations that drive different people, and how people think. Because of this, I find myself helping other people relate to and understand each other, especially when they are previously not getting along.

Columbus To-Do List #1

I have chosen to do the local food list. I haven’t decided which other restaurants to visit yet, but I am excited about the opportunity to try new types of foods and explore different parts of Columbus, as well as spend time with other HE Scholars. I hope that, through this experience, I will get to know all that Columbus offers, as well as become more familiar with transportation around Columbus.

For the first experience, I went with a group of HE Scholars to Eden Burger, a vegan burger restaurant. Even though all of the food was without meat or other animal products, the meal was extremely flavorful and did not taste like it was lacking anything. The location itself was also very nice; we sat outside in the evening, and after the sun went down, the porch was lit with pretty string lights. I would definitely go back, and would recommend that other people go as well, especially if they are vegan or curious about vegan food.
