Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. G.O.A.L.S.

Just going to a large school like Ohio State has influenced my view on diversity. I went to a predominantly white (despite being Filipino myself) Catholic high school where diversity was forced to say the least. The amount of people I have met from different economic and cultural backgrounds has been eye-opening. I also have the privilege of taking Doctor Lisa Abrams workshop class about diversity in Engineering and we focus on biases and just explore the improvement of women and other minorities in Engineering. Our labs for ENGR 1181 are a great way to incorporate original inquiry by creating lab reports based off of lab results, as well as additional research to relate the problem to a real world problem. Working in many groups and teams throughout my course load has influenced and improved my leadership capabilities. In addition, I was the Captain of my high school hockey team and vastly improved my public speaking and strategical leading skills.

Career

[“Career” is where you can collect information about your experiences and skills that will apply to your future career.  Like your resume, this is information that will evolve over time and should be continually updated.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. Artifacts

Throughout my four years in high school, I was a full time student of course, but also a full time athlete. I have been playing hockey since the age of 2, and I have learned more about leadership, teamwork, and countless other traits in hockey than I have at school. After years of maintaining my extracurriculars and schoolwork, I was chosen to win the U.S. Army Reserve National Scholar/Athlete Award. I was extremely proud to win this award as I brought together two parts of my life in which I learned the most from.

About Me

My name is Jakhari Desphy and I am a first year pre-mechanical engineering student at The Ohio State University. I am originally from Canton, Ohio, but I like to say Cleveland or Akron because they have more clout. An important part of my life is hockey, as I have been inundated in the lifestyle since the age of two. Hockey has given me strong teamwork, communication, and leadership skills that I hope will carry over to my college activities. As far as hobbies go, I love to edit videos and I am trying to start a freelance video editing business. Most of my previous work have been school projects and hockey hype videos for my high school team (https://m.youtube.com/watch?feature=youtu.be&v=3GxqacYCvwk). I have worked in my hockey off-season since 2016. I worked at Sluggers and Putters Family Fun Park for two summers where I was a Ride Operator. I worked at Yoga Bliss this past year as a front desk person. Also, I coached youth hockey camps for USA Hockey this past summer.
