Perspective

Design 2310: Visualization Principles

Assignment 1: Structure

Description

In this assignment, you will use linear perspective techniques as a guide to create simple and complex forms situated in a constructed space. This process involves a variety of constructive, observational, and representational drawing techniques to define a rendered space and volumetric forms. You will rely on constructing essential forms like cubes to construct complex objects. This assignment is contextualized in the following prompt:

Imagine you are provided your own private creative interior space: Visualize, construct, and draw this space.

Objectives

Upon completion of this assignment, you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate proficiencies in a range of observational and drafted drawing techniques including perspective drawing, triangulation, unit of measure, contouring, and other linear applications
  • Develop drawing skills that support both analog and digital applications.
  • Select, integrate, and intentionally apply drawing techniques with emphasis on types of perspective (1 and 2 point) to a 2D drawn composition corresponding to an invented/imagined 3D space.
  • Organize and communicate design process through documentation.

Process

  1. Actively participate in drawing exercises building technical skills that apply to the final assignment. Practice!
  2. Determine the specific dimensions of your 100-350 sq feet studio space (adding height).
  3. Use the guidelines for linear perspective to layout an underlying grid in preparation of constructing an interior room.
  4. Design your space using an underlying perspective grid (each grid implies 1’ square). Consider the size and placement of your objects and elements in relationship to your space (scale.)
  5. Reference, select and practice elements to arrange in your space- this is an opportunity to express “something”- have some fun- as you include the minimum of these required 4 elements:
    • An architectural detail.
    • An object that defies gravity in some way.
    • An object that signifies an activity such as work or play.
    • A personal item (no larger than a person).
  6. Compose your objects in the space with grid units as a guide. Start with the objects’ essential shapes and develop form complexities when they are situated in the space.
  7. Add details to the space and forms as necessary; use visual references and observational drawing skills to inform your constructed perspective drawing process. We encourage you to explore your structural drawing through sketches- digital and analog. The grid guidelines are drawn on the first Bristol layer. You will layer trace paper over your grid to test placements to further develop forms and spatial decisions.
  8. Select your final composition and elements. Create your final composition by combining your layers to clean Bristol paper or drawing paper. Final composition will be completed using a variety of line weights in Micron Pen or pencil work.

Materials

Mechanical pencil, Bristol, Micron pens, eraser, trace paper, grid paper, tape, ruler, triangle, T-square, scissors, cutting knife, cutting matt, drawing paper.

Composition Requirements

  1. Default perspective- 1pt (you may use 2 pt perspective)
  2. Final submission size: Use 14×17 Drawing paper, Trace paper, and Bristol paper
  3. Graphite Pencil/micron pen/marker only.
  4. Rendered space:  Between 100- 350 sq. ft. floor plan.
  5. Minimum of four fully rendered objects (structural, function, working, personal- list above). Add creatively to these requirements in any way that serves your idea of a creative space.

Process Post Content Requirements

  1. Create a personal file. Label it-  Vis_22_A1_ProcessPost_Content
  2. Write a concise paragraph (150-300 words) explaining your assignment intentions (type of space, techniques, and creative motivation). Tell your project story. This will be done primarily through images with supporting text. You may use this statement in your final submission (see Assignment Deliverables below).
  3. Photograph or scan class activities, exercises, and project steps. These will include:
    • Point, Line
    • Contouring
    • Layering
    • Measuring (implied line, triangulation, unit of measure)
    • Still life
    • Boxes and Perspective 1pt and 2pt
    • Perspective grids 1pt (optional 2pt)
    • Box manipulation- building complex forms
    • Additional self-driven practice and testing
    • Final composition building.

4. Write a concise reflection statement.

You will use this content to build your portfolio process post at the completion of the assignment. Your process post is due 9/30/22. Keep and protect all process work!!! Document as you go (do not procrastinate- we will have check points to facilitate this process (see assignment calendar).
