Design 2310: Visualization Principles
Assignment 3: MashUp
Module 3: Manipulation & Communication
Description
In this project, you will explore communication through text and imagery. You will manipulate 2D and 3D forms (letter forms, objects, and spaces) focusing on isometric drawing techniques. Outcomes will illustrate definitions of an invented word.
Objectives
Through this project, students will:
- Identify and creatively apply a range of elements (primary: form, color and value) and principles (dominance, essence, scale/proportion) associated with a visual composition
- Illustrate ideas inspired by combining imagery, text and forms of text (typography).
- Plan composition organization through strategies related to essential underlying grid structure
- Develop and describe ideas through iteration
- Demonstrate intentional crafting techniques in both analog and digital drawing applications and tools
Exercise
Exercise 1: Select a font that you feel represents some aspect or quality of your personality. Write your name or initials using this font. Transfer this text to an isometric grid and create an extruded 3D isometric illustration of your name/initials. Test methods of drawing by using different tools in Illustrator. Use layers to upload an isometric grid. Additional layers: Test and experiment with line weight, value, color and fill variations.
Process
- Make a list of a minimum of 30 different words: nouns, adjectives and verbs. Look for possible associations between words. Example: apple, tree or apple, eye or apple, sauce or apple
- Create word mashups. Use one noun in combination with a verb or adjective. Example: Flippery (fish (verb or noun!) and slippery (adjective))
3. Create a dictionary definition format for your mash-up word. Example:
FISH
verb
fished; fishing; fishes
Definition of fish (Entry 2 of 3)
intransitive verb
1: to attempt to catch fish
2: to seek something by roundabout means– fishing for a compliment
3a: to search for something under water– fish for pearls
b: to engage in a search by groping or feeling– fishing around in her purse for her keys
transitive verb
1a: to try to catch fish in
b: to fish with: use (something, such as a boat, a net, or bait) in fishing
2a: to go fishing for– fish salmon
b: to pull or draw as if fishing– fished the ball from under the car, fish wires through a conduit
Making the Poster:
- Create your illustrator document (11”x17”). Create or upload the isometric grid (layer 1).
- Begin testing how to manipulate your text (word mashup!) using the isometric format. Your extruded text will illustrate the definition of your “new” word. Use exercise techniques to start and continue experimenting with Illustrator tools.
- With your illustration technique and forms well underway, begin testing the organization of your poster contents. Test how the word (letter forms in combination) support readability and the definition. Consider the activation of the page. Testing Scale, Harmony, Empasis (and other principles) can help you intentionally compose the final image: balancing readability and creativity.
- Refine details and techniques for final poster design.
- Create submission document- save as pdf.
Requirements
- Mash-up word creatively organized using isometric construction techniques.
- Definition of the word in dictionary format.
- Your poster artboard is 11”x17” (vertical or landscape orientation).
- If you wish to use hand techniques instead of digital techniques, please talk with your instructor.
Value scale and limited color: 3 Hues (max.)- you may use less.
Tools/Materials: Illustrator, Photoshop, Sketchbook and/or hand drawing techniques
Make sure to document all process in u.osu process journal post!
Process Post Content Requirements
- Create a personal file. Label it- Vis_22_A3_ProcessPost_Content
- Write a concise paragraph (150-300 words) explaining your assignment intentions (type of space, techniques, and creative motivation). Add process notes- example: label images- what do we see in each?
Tell your project story! This will be done primarily through images with supporting text. - Photograph or scan class activities, exercises, and project steps. These will include:
-
- Notable gathered information and observations (collected words, images (with citations)
- Isometric and Ai drawing exercises (hand and digital techniques)
- Text and Font analysis
- Composition testing: explorations, tests, layers reflecting organization of drawn elements.
- Additional self-driven practice and testing
- Final composition building with final images.
4. Write a concise reflection statement.
You will use this content to build your portfolio process post.
Keep and protect all process work!!! Document as you go (do not procrastinate- easier said than done!) We will have check points to facilitate this process (see assignment calendar).
Deliverables
All final deliverables are due during your scheduled class finals time
- Upload to Carmen assignment.
A single PDF. *Please use this format for creating your file name: A3Mashup_YourName_AuVis22.pdf
