Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. G.O.A.L.S.

G. Global Awareness:

It has been a lifetime dream of mine to travel to different countries in order to experience the vast variety of cultures around the world. This year, I chose to partake in Ohio State’s S.T.E.P. program as a way to help me achieve this dream. I am currently searching through the wide range of opportunities available through education abroad, Buck-i-Serve trips, and other service learning trips that I could potentially use my $2,000 grant money towards. Although I am still deciding on which program I will take part in, I am confident that my study abroad experience will be truly life-changing, and I cannot wait to see what the world has to offer. There is so much to be learned from being placed in cultures different from the ones we grow up in, and I know that it will be simply incredible.

O. Original Inquiry:

I have recently received the opportunity to partake in research in the Neuromuscular Biomechanics Laboratory on Ohio State’s campus with Dr. Siston. The students and faculty who work in this lab are currently delving in to the science behind total knee replacement surgeries, and working closely with orthopedic surgeons in order to help improve the results of these intense procedures. Although I have only just begun my time in the lab, I look forward to getting more involved in projects planned for the future, as well as using this as a gateway into honors undergrad research that I can use to work towards my master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.

A. Academic Enrichment:

I am currently a student in the University’s College of Engineering, planning to major in Mechanical Engineering with a minor in Biomedical Engineering. My ultimate goal in pursuing this degree is to land a job working with prosthetics; I hope to use my knowledge and skills acquired throughout my collegiate years to work with people with physical disabilities in order to improve their quality of life. Even as a first-semester freshman, my course load is already packed and rigorous, but I am prepared for the challenge. I believe that all of the hours of studying and hard work will ultimately pay off in the form of a rewarding career. Through the courses in the mechanical engineering major, with a specialization in the biomechanics and biomedical areas, I will commit and prepare myself for the bright future that I am determined to reach, and being surrounded by fellow students who are as focused and determined as I am will assist me to reach my goals.

L. Leadership Development:

While I have enjoyed smaller leadership roles through various activities during my time thus far at Ohio State, I am preparing to take on larger roles as I become more accustomed to the organizations that I am involved in. I have benefited a lot through being a part of the Mount Leadership Society scholars program, and feel as though my leadership skills have only improved since beginning my year of service at the  Broad Street After School program last semester. I have taken a junior executive position on the board of Alpha Chi Omega, and look forward to taking on more responsibilities in the sorority that has given me so much in the past year alone. I have become much more in tune with my leadership style, and look forward to developing it even more in the future.

S. Service Engagement:

The ‘Year of Service’ that I have been taking part in over the past two semesters has truly been an eye-opening experience, even more so than I could have ever imagined. Beginning my time at the Broad Street After School program taught me a great deal about what it takes to be a caregiver to children, a tutor to struggling students, and a fellow volunteer in an area of town that may not be so glamorous. This opportunity taught me patience, while giving me a new understanding of what life in poverty really looks like so close to home. This semester, I have been volunteering at a food pantry that serves people suffering through cancer, HIV and AIDS. While the duties at this location are not so glamorous, I have recognized their importance, as they are crucial to keeping the pantry up and running in order to help so many people in need.

Artifacts

“The Kite Runner,” written by Khaled Hosseini, is one of my artifacts that represents a significant project in my life that allowed for growth as a student and as a person. I read two books written by Khaled Hosseini during my junior and senior years in high school, and was blown away by his writing. During my senior year, we did a large project over a certain aspect that was present in this novel, and had to tie in culture, symbolism, and creativity from what we read and researched. Going beyond what the assignment required and really connecting with the themes in his writing gave me a whole new perspective on assignments as well as writing, and this project allowed me to develop as a writer, student, and person.

About Me

Hi, my name is Brooke Delventhal, and I am proud to be a First-Year Buckeye at The Ohio State University. I am from Strongsville, Ohio, which is a suburb about 30 minutes south of Cleveland. I graduated in a class of 550 students, which is no where near the size of the new freshman class here at OSU! I enjoyed being active in my high school, and served as the captain of the girls’ varsity swim team, as well as being a part of National Honor Society. Service and leadership have always been important in my life growing up, so I always look for opportunities where I can use my talents to help others.

Because of this, I am very excited to be a part of the Mount Leadership Society Scholars Program, and look forward to learning so much more about serving others while at Ohio State. I am also studying biomedical engineering, and hope to find a career working with prosthetics so that I am able to use my education to impact the lives of others. I cannot wait to see all of the opportunities that are to come, and look forward to seeing where my life at OSU takes me.
